🔧 Tacoma - Accessory Drive Belt Replacement (No Timing Belt)

Your Tacoma’s 4.0L V6 uses a timing chain, not a timing belt—so there is no timing belt to replace on a maintenance schedule. Most people asking this are actually needing the accessory drive belt (the belt that runs the alternator, A/C, and power steering).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cold engine; belts/pulleys get very hot.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/hair/clothing away from pulleys and the fan.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with hands near the belt area.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but remove the key and keep it in your pocket.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive breaker bar
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram (usually on the radiator support or underside of the hood).
  • If the diagram is missing, take a clear photo of the belt routing before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Get access and identify the tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley assembly that keeps the belt tight).
  • If a plastic upper cover blocks access, remove clips using a trim clip removal tool.

Step 2: Relieve belt tension

  • Place a 14mm socket on the tensioner’s hex boss/bolt head.
  • Use a 3/8" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and relieve tension.
  • Tip: Move it slowly—spring tension is strong.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • While holding the tensioner rotated with the breaker bar, slide the belt off the easiest-to-reach pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to rest.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.

Step 4: Inspect pulleys and tensioner

  • Spin each pulley by hand (no tools). They should feel smooth and quiet.
  • If you feel grinding, wobble, or hear noise, stop and tell me which pulley feels bad.

Step 5: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt following the under-hood diagram (use your photo if needed).
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in the grooved pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest pulley for last (usually a smooth idler pulley).

Step 6: Apply tension and seat the belt

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Double-check belt alignment on every pulley with the flashlight.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 15-30 seconds; it should run smoothly with no wandering.
  • Listen for squeal or chirping. If you hear noise, shut it off and re-check belt seating.
  • Reinstall any covers/clips you removed.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$220 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $60-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
