🔧 Outback - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Outback is a very simple repair. The fuel cap seals the fuel tank so vapors stay contained, and a bad cap can trigger an EVAP leak code or a check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames, cigarettes, heaters, or sparks.
  • ⚠️ Do not replace the cap while refueling.
  • ⚠️ Fuel vapors are flammable, so keep the filler area clean and dry.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Outback on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Make sure the vehicle is in Park and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Let the vehicle sit for a minute before opening the fuel door if it was just driven.
  • If your check engine light is on from a loose or failed cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off after replacement.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the rear passenger side of your Outback.
  • No tool is needed for this step.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves before handling the fuel cap area.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes free.
  • A tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap attached to the vehicle so it does not get lost.
  • Inspect the tether connection near the fuel door.
  • If the old cap has a tether clip, use your hand to unclip it from the fuel door area.
  • Do not use pliers here.

Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck

  • Use your eyes to check the metal filler neck where the cap seals.
  • Look for dirt, rust, dents, or pieces of the old rubber seal.
  • If needed, wipe the sealing surface gently with a clean lint-free rag.
  • A sealing surface is the smooth area where the cap gasket presses to stop fuel vapors from leaking.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • If the new fuel cap includes a tether, attach the tether clip by hand to the original mounting point.
  • Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck.
  • Use your hand to turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Continue until you hear at least one firm click.
  • No torque spec applies because the fuel cap uses a built-in ratcheting click mechanism.
  • One click is enough.

Step 5: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
  • Make sure it sits flush with the body panel.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Outback and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • If the check engine light was caused by an EVAP leak from the cap, it may clear by itself after several normal trips.
  • If the light stays on after a few days, scan for codes with an OBD2 scan tool.
  • An OBD2 scan tool is a small device that plugs into the vehicle diagnostic port to read and clear fault codes.
  • Do not clear codes before checking them, because the code helps confirm whether the cap was the issue.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor/diagnostic time)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
