🔧 Engine Air Filter - Replacement

Changing the engine air filter on your Outback helps the 3.6L engine breathe clean air and can improve drivability, fuel economy, and engine protection. This is a very beginner-friendly repair with no fluid, lifting, or scan tool work required.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and fingers away from the cooling fans.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the air filter or air box cover is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Shop vacuum with crevice nozzle

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔥 Turn the engine off and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • 💡 Open the hood and support it securely with the hood prop.
  • 📦 The engine air filter is inside the black air filter housing near the front passenger side of the engine bay.
  • 📘 A crevice nozzle is the narrow vacuum attachment used to clean small spaces.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Housing

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Stand at the front of your Outback and look toward the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • Find the black plastic air filter housing connected to the large intake tube.
  • Take a photo first.

Step 2: Release the Air Box Clips

  • Use your fingers to release the metal retaining clips on the air filter housing cover.
  • A retaining clip is a spring-style latch that holds the plastic air box cover closed.
  • Pull each clip outward until it pops free from the cover.
  • No torque spec applies because these clips are hand-operated.

Step 3: Open the Air Filter Housing

  • Use both hands to gently lift and separate the air filter housing cover from the lower box.
  • Move the cover only far enough to access the filter.
  • Do not force the intake tube or wiring near the air box.
  • Gentle movement prevents cracked plastic.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hand to slide the old engine air filter out of the housing.
  • Note the filter direction and how the rubber sealing edge sits in the box.
  • Place the old filter aside and keep dirt from falling into the intake opening.

Step 5: Clean the Air Filter Housing

  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove leaves, sand, and loose dirt from the lower air box.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing surface where the filter sits.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake tube.
  • Clean sealing surfaces prevent air leaks.

Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing.
  • Make sure the rubber seal sits flat all the way around the filter edge.
  • The filter must not be folded, pinched, or sitting crooked.
  • No torque spec applies because the filter is seated by hand.

Step 7: Close the Air Filter Housing

  • Use both hands to lower the air filter housing cover back into position.
  • Make sure the cover sits evenly against the filter seal.
  • If the cover will not close easily, reopen it and reseat the filter.
  • Never clamp a crooked filter.

Step 8: Secure the Air Box Clips

  • Use your fingers to snap each metal retaining clip back over the air filter housing cover.
  • Confirm every clip is fully locked and the cover is not loose.
  • No torque spec applies because the clips lock by hand.

Step 9: Final Visual Check

  • Use your hands to gently check that the intake tube and air box cover are secure.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to remove any loose dust around the work area.
  • Close the hood firmly once everything is secure.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Outback and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  • 👂 Listen for unusual hissing near the air box, which can mean the cover is not sealed correctly.
  • 🔍 If the engine idle sounds rough, turn the engine off and recheck that the air filter is seated flat.
  • 📅 Replace the engine air filter at the normal service interval, or sooner in dusty conditions.
