🔧 Outback - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter on your Outback is a simple beginner-friendly job. The air filter keeps dirt and dust out of the engine, and a clogged filter can reduce power, fuel economy, and throttle response.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and fingers away from the radiator fans.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the air filter is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Vacuum cleaner with crevice attachment

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Outback on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • The air filter housing is the black plastic box near the front-right side of the engine bay, connected to the large intake tube.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Housing

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Find the black plastic air filter box on the passenger side/front area of the engine bay.
  • The housing has metal spring clips that hold the top cover to the lower box.
  • A spring clip is a small metal latch that snaps the air box cover closed.

Step 2: Release the Air Box Clips

  • Use your fingers to unhook the metal spring clips from the air filter housing cover.
  • If the clips are dusty, use a shop towel to improve your grip.
  • Do not bend the clips sharply; they only need to swing away from the cover.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo first.

Step 3: Open the Air Filter Housing

  • Lift the air filter housing cover slightly by hand.
  • Move it just enough to slide the old filter out.
  • Do not pull hard on the intake tube or wiring nearby.
  • No bolts are removed for normal air filter replacement on your Outback.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Pull the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
  • Notice its direction before removing it fully.
  • The rubber edge seals against the housing to keep dirt out.
  • Tip: Match the new filter orientation.

Step 5: Clean the Air Filter Box

  • Use a vacuum cleaner with crevice attachment to remove loose leaves, sand, or dust from the lower air box.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits.
  • Do not blow dirt toward the intake tube.
  • Do not use water inside the air filter housing.

Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower housing by hand.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
  • The filter should not be crushed, folded, or tilted.
  • No torque spec applies because no fasteners are tightened during this repair.

Step 7: Close and Secure the Air Filter Housing

  • Lower the air filter housing cover by hand.
  • Make sure the cover seats evenly over the new filter.
  • Snap the metal spring clips back into place by hand.
  • Check that no part of the filter seal is pinched outside the housing.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  • Listen for hissing or whistling near the air box, which can mean the cover is not sealed.
  • Turn the engine off and recheck that the clips are fully latched.
  • No scan tool reset or infotainment menu step is required.
  • Replace the engine air filter about every 30,000 miles, or sooner in dusty conditions.
