🔧 Outback - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter on your Outback helps the 3.6L flat-six breathe properly and protects the engine from dust and debris. This is a very beginner-friendly job: you’ll open the air filter housing, swap the filter, and make sure the housing seals fully.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and fingers away from the cooling fans.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the air filter housing is open.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop vacuum
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Outback on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • The engine air filter housing is the large black plastic box on the passenger side of the engine bay, connected to the intake tube.
  • A “clip” is a small metal latch that holds the air filter box closed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Housing

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Stand at the front of your Outback and look toward the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • Find the black air filter box connected to the large ribbed intake tube.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe loose dust from the top of the housing.
  • Keep dirt out of the intake.

Step 2: Release the Air Box Clips

  • Use your fingers to flip open the metal retaining clips on the air filter housing.
  • If the clips are dusty, wipe around them with a clean microfiber towel before opening.
  • Do not bend the clips; they should pop loose with light hand pressure.

Step 3: Open the Housing

  • Use both hands to gently separate the upper half of the air filter housing from the lower half.
  • You only need enough space to slide the old filter out.
  • Do not pull hard on the attached intake tube or wiring nearby.
  • No bolts are normally removed for this filter service, and there are no torque specs for the air box clips.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hands to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the housing.
  • Look at how it sits before removing it completely, so the new one goes in the same way.
  • Check for leaves, sand, or debris in the bottom of the air box.

Step 5: Clean the Air Box

  • Use a shop vacuum to remove loose debris from the lower air filter box.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake opening.
  • A clean seal prevents unfiltered air leaks.

Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing.
  • Make sure the rubber edge sits flat all the way around.
  • The filter should not be folded, pinched, or sitting at an angle.
  • If it does not fit easily, remove it and reposition it. Do not force it.

Step 7: Close and Secure the Housing

  • Use both hands to bring the upper housing back down evenly over the filter.
  • Check that the housing edges line up and the filter is not sticking out.
  • Use your fingers to snap the metal retaining clips back into place.
  • Confirm each clip is fully seated and holding the housing closed.

Step 8: Final Visual Check

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the area around the air box.
  • Check that the intake tube is still connected and not loose.
  • Make sure no tools, towels, or packaging are left in the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Outback and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing sound from the air filter box area.
  • If you hear a hiss or the engine runs rough, turn the engine off and recheck that the filter is seated flat and the clips are locked.
  • No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required.
  • Replace the engine air filter about every 30,000 miles under normal driving, or sooner in dusty areas.
