🔧 Outback - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter keeps dust, pollen, and odors from entering the cabin through the HVAC system. On your Outback, the cabin filter is located behind the glove box and can be changed without removing major trim.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before starting so the blower fan cannot run while your hands are near the filter opening.
  • ⚠️ Empty the glove box first so items do not fall out when it swings down.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • ⚠️ Work gently around the glove box hinges and stops; the plastic tabs can crack if forced.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition fully off.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • 📦 Empty the glove box completely.
  • 💡 Use a flashlight to see the filter door clearly behind the glove box.
  • ℹ️ A trim removal tool is a small plastic pry tool that helps release clips without scratching panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Remove all items from the glove box so nothing falls when it drops down.
  • Use the flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small damper arm.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Disconnect the Glove Box Damper

  • Use your fingers to slide the glove box damper arm off its small peg on the right side of the glove box.
  • If it feels tight, use the trim removal tool to gently help lift it off the peg.
  • Do not pull hard; the damper is a small plastic slow-drop arm.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box Past the Stops

  • Use both hands to press inward on the left and right sides of the glove box.
  • While pressing inward, slowly lower the glove box until the side stops clear the dashboard opening.
  • Let the glove box hang down gently.
  • No bolts are removed, so there are no torque specs for this step.
  • Tip: Press evenly on both sides.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover

  • Use the flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin air filter cover behind the glove box opening.
  • Use your fingers to squeeze the tabs on the filter cover.
  • Pull the cover straight out and set it aside.
  • If a tab is stubborn, use the trim removal tool gently at the edge of the cover.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your fingers to pull the old cabin air filter straight out of the slot.
  • Keep the filter level so dust and leaves do not spill into the blower housing.
  • Look at the airflow arrow or orientation marking on the old filter before removing it completely.
  • Tip: Match the arrow direction exactly.

Step 6: Clean the Filter Opening

  • Use the flashlight to inspect inside the filter slot.
  • Use your gloved fingers to remove leaves or large debris you can easily reach.
  • Do not push debris deeper into the HVAC box.
  • Do not run the blower motor with the filter removed.

Step 7: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the slot.
  • Install it with the airflow arrow facing the same direction as the original filter.
  • Slide it in slowly so the pleats do not fold or crush.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully inside the housing.

Step 8: Reinstall the Filter Cover

  • Use your hands to position the cabin filter cover over the opening.
  • Press the cover in until the tabs click into place.
  • Use the flashlight to confirm the cover is seated evenly on both sides.

Step 9: Raise and Reattach the Glove Box

  • Use both hands to lift the glove box back toward the dashboard opening.
  • Press inward on both sides of the glove box so the side stops pass back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm onto the small peg on the right side by pushing it on with your fingers.
  • Open and close the glove box once to confirm it moves smoothly.

Step 10: Test the HVAC System

  • Use your hand to start the engine or turn the ignition to accessory mode.
  • Turn the fan on low, then medium, then high using the climate controls.
  • Listen for rattles, rubbing, or clicking sounds.
  • If you hear noise, turn the system off and recheck that the filter is fully seated.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm strong airflow from the vents.
  • ✅ Make sure the glove box opens and closes normally.
  • ✅ Check that the filter cover is clipped in securely.
  • ✅ Replace the cabin air filter about every 12,000-15,000 miles, or sooner in dusty areas.
  • ✅ No scan tool, coding, or infotainment reset is required.
