🔧 Outback - Alternator Replacement

Replacing the alternator on your Outback involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and swapping the alternator from the top of the engine bay. The alternator charges the battery and powers electrical systems while the engine is running, so a failing one can cause warning lights, weak charging, or a dead battery.

Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring to prevent sparks or electrical damage.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before starting; the alternator sits near hot engine components.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the serpentine belt path and pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry against the aluminum timing cover or plastic engine parts.
  • ⚠️ The battery may lose saved radio, clock, and window memory settings after disconnecting.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and let the engine cool for at least 30 minutes if it was recently driven.
  • 🧠 A digital multimeter is a tool that measures voltage; you will use it to confirm the new alternator is charging correctly.
  • 🧰 A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin wrench used to move the belt tensioner safely in tight spaces.
  • 📸 Take a photo of the belt routing before removal so reinstalling the belt is easier.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery.
  • Negative cable comes off first.

Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Use your hands to lift the plastic engine cover upward from its rubber mounting grommets.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help lift it.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.

Step 3: Note the Serpentine Belt Routing

  • Use your phone to take a clear photo of how the belt wraps around the pulleys.
  • Look for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or fraying on the belt.
  • If the belt shows wear, replace it now with the new serpentine drive belt.

Step 4: Release Belt Tension

  • Place the serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve tension from the belt.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first while holding the tensioner released.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position; do not let it snap back.
  • Slow movement protects the tensioner.

Step 5: Move the Belt Aside

  • Use your hands to move the belt away from the alternator area.
  • If you are replacing the belt, remove it completely from all pulleys.
  • If reusing the belt, keep it routed around the lower pulleys to make reinstallation easier.

Step 6: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connector

  • Find the small electrical plug at the rear of the alternator.
  • Press the connector lock tab with your thumb or a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Pull the connector straight off; do not pull on the wires.
  • Wiggle the plug, not the wires.

Step 7: Remove the Alternator Output Cable

  • Lift the rubber protective boot from the larger alternator power terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the nut from the output cable terminal.
  • Move the cable away from the alternator and keep the nut in a safe place.
  • When reinstalling, tighten the output terminal nut to Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).

Step 8: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension set to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • If equipped with a rear support bracket fastener, use a 14mm socket to loosen or remove it as needed.
  • Set all bolts aside in order so they return to the same locations.

Step 9: Remove the Alternator

  • Use both hands to lift the alternator out of its bracket.
  • If it is tight in the bracket, gently rock it side to side by hand.
  • Do not use a screwdriver to pry against soft aluminum engine parts.

Step 10: Compare the Old and New Alternators

  • Place both alternators side by side on a clean surface.
  • Confirm the pulley grooves, mounting ears, electrical connector, and output terminal are in the same positions.
  • If the pulley protective cap is installed on the new alternator, remove it by hand before installation.

Step 11: Install the New Alternator

  • Lower the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket if equipped, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the fasteners.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-80 ft-lbs to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • If a rear support bracket fastener was removed, tighten it to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Place the large output cable back onto the alternator terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 10-80 ft-lbs carefully at low setting to tighten the nut to Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber protective boot fully back over the terminal.
  • Push the small electrical connector onto the alternator until it clicks.

Step 13: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the serpentine drive belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Leave the alternator pulley for last because it is easy to reach.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that every belt rib is seated correctly in every pulley groove.
  • One rib off can shred the belt.

Step 14: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Line up the engine cover with the rubber mounting grommets.
  • Press down evenly by hand until it seats securely.

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

  • Apply a small amount of battery terminal anti-corrosion grease to the negative battery post if needed.
  • Install the negative battery cable onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal clamp until snug.
  • Do not overtighten; the clamp only needs to stay firmly in place.

Step 16: Check Charging Voltage

  • Set the digital multimeter to DC volts.
  • Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery terminal and the black meter lead to the negative battery terminal.
  • With the engine off, a healthy charged battery should read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
  • Start the engine and check again; charging voltage should usually read about 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • If voltage stays near 12 volts with the engine running, shut the engine off and recheck the belt and alternator wiring.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal, grinding, or rubbing noises after startup.
  • ✅ Watch the battery warning light; it should turn off shortly after the engine starts.
  • ✅ Turn on headlights, rear defroster, and blower motor, then confirm charging voltage remains stable with the digital multimeter.
  • ✅ Recheck that the serpentine belt is centered on every pulley after the engine has run for one minute.
  • ✅ Reset the clock and any saved driver preferences if they were lost after battery disconnect.
  • ✅ If the auto window function stops working, initialize the window by fully closing it and holding the switch up for a few seconds.
