🔧 Outback - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing a side view mirror on your Outback means removing the front door trim panel, unplugging the mirror wiring, unbolting the mirror from inside the door, and installing the new mirror assembly. This applies to the left or right side; the steps are the same, just mirrored.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-90 minutes per side

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging mirror electrical connectors.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses. Door panel clips can pop loose suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand before removing the last mounting nut so it does not fall and scratch the paint.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry against painted surfaces. Use plastic trim tools only.
  • ⚠️ If your replacement mirror has blind spot warning, turn signal, heat, or memory features, match the same feature set as the original mirror.

  • Front door trim panel clips - Qty: As needed
  • Mirror mounting nuts - Qty: 3 if damaged or missing

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground and switch the ignition off.
  • 🪟 Lower the front door window fully on the side you are repairing.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🧰 Put all screws and clips in a magnetic parts tray as you remove them.
  • 📌 A trim clip is a small plastic fastener that snaps the door panel to the metal door.
  • 📌 A mirror assembly is the full outside mirror unit, including the housing, motor, glass, and wiring.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and place it aside so it cannot touch the terminal.

Step 2: Protect the Paint

  • Apply painter’s tape around the mirror base on the outside of the door.
  • Place another strip of painter’s tape along the upper door edge near the mirror.
  • Tape prevents accidental scratches.

Step 3: Remove the Inner Door Handle Screw Cover

  • Use a plastic panel pry tool set to gently lift the small cover behind the inside front door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the cover.

Step 4: Remove the Door Pull Screw

  • Use a plastic panel pry tool set to lift the small rubber mat or cover inside the door pull pocket.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw in the door pull pocket.

Step 5: Release the Front Door Trim Panel Clips

  • Start at the lower rear corner of the door panel.
  • Use a plastic trim clip remover to pop the first trim clip loose.
  • Work along the bottom and both sides with the plastic trim clip remover until all clips are loose.
  • Do not pull the top straight outward. The top hooks over the window ledge.

Step 6: Lift the Door Panel Off the Window Ledge

  • Use both hands to lift the front door panel upward.
  • Hold the panel close to the door because wiring and handle cables are still attached.
  • Rest the panel against your leg or have a helper hold it.

Step 7: Disconnect Door Panel Wiring

  • Use a shop light to see the connectors behind the switch panel.
  • Press each connector release tab by hand and unplug the connectors.
  • If a release tab is tight, use a pick tool set or flat-blade screwdriver carefully to depress the tab.

Step 8: Disconnect the Inner Handle Cables

  • Look behind the door panel at the inside handle assembly.
  • Use needle-nose pliers only if needed to rotate the cable ends out of the handle levers.
  • Unclip the cable housings from the handle bracket by hand.
  • Set the door panel on a clean towel or cardboard.
  • 📌 A cable housing is the outer sleeve that holds the moving cable in place.

Step 9: Remove the Mirror Interior Trim Cover

  • The mirror trim cover is the small triangular plastic panel inside the door near the mirror.
  • Use a plastic panel pry tool set to gently pry the cover away from the door.
  • Pull it straight off by hand once the clips release.

Step 10: Unplug the Side Mirror Connector

  • Use a shop light to locate the mirror wiring connector near the upper front area of the door.
  • Unclip the wiring harness from any retainers by hand.
  • Press the connector release tab by hand and unplug the side mirror connector.
  • If the release tab is tight, use a pick tool set carefully.

Step 11: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts

  • Support the mirror on the outside of the door with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
  • Keep the nuts in a magnetic parts tray so they do not fall into the door.
  • Hold the mirror before the last nut.

Step 12: Remove the Old Mirror

  • From outside the door, pull the mirror straight away from the door.
  • Feed the mirror wiring and connector through the door opening by hand.
  • If the gasket sticks, gently work it loose by hand. Do not use a metal screwdriver on paint.

Step 13: Install the New Mirror

  • Feed the new mirror wiring through the door opening by hand.
  • Seat the mirror gasket flat against the outside of the door.
  • Hold the mirror in place with one hand.
  • Start all three mirror mounting nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.

Step 14: Tighten the Mirror Mounting Nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and torque wrench rated 5-80 Nm to tighten the mirror nuts evenly.
  • Tighten in small passes so the mirror gasket seats flat.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 15: Reconnect the Mirror Wiring

  • Plug the mirror connector in by hand until it clicks.
  • Clip the wiring harness back into its retainers by hand.
  • Make sure the wiring cannot touch the window glass path.

Step 16: Test the Mirror Before Reassembly

  • Use a 10mm wrench to temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the mirror switch to test up, down, left, and right movement.
  • Test mirror heat if equipped by turning on the rear defroster.
  • Test the mirror turn signal and blind spot warning indicator if equipped.
  • Switch the ignition off after testing.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable again before reinstalling the panel.

Step 17: Reinstall the Mirror Interior Trim Cover

  • Line up the triangular mirror trim cover clips by hand.
  • Press the cover into place until the clips snap in.

Step 18: Reconnect Door Panel Cables and Wiring

  • Reconnect the inside handle cables by hand.
  • Make sure each cable housing snaps fully into its bracket.
  • Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors by hand until each clicks.

Step 19: Reinstall the Front Door Panel

  • Hook the top edge of the door panel over the window ledge.
  • Line up the trim clips with the holes in the door.
  • Press around the sides and bottom by hand until all clips snap in.
  • If a clip is broken, replace it with a front door trim panel clip.

Step 20: Reinstall the Door Screws and Covers

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to install the screw behind the inner door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to install the screw in the door pull pocket.
  • Snap the screw cover and door pull mat/cover back into place by hand.

Step 21: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal nut until snug. Do not overtighten it.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test mirror movement in all directions.
  • ✅ Test mirror heat by turning on the rear defroster if equipped.
  • ✅ Test the mirror turn signal if equipped.
  • ✅ Test blind spot warning indicator if equipped by confirming the indicator lights during the vehicle’s bulb check.
  • ✅ Test the front window and door lock switches on the repaired door.
  • ✅ If the front window auto function needs relearning, fully close the window, hold the switch up for 2 seconds, fully lower it, then hold down for 2 seconds.
  • ✅ Check for wind noise or water leaks after the next drive or wash.
