🔧 Outback - Rear Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the rear wheels, retract the electronic parking brake (EPB), then swap the rear pads and rotors. After reassembly, you’ll torque everything correctly and bed-in the new pads so braking is smooth and quiet.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support your Outback with jack stands before working underneath.
  • 🛑 Do not press the brake pedal with a rear caliper removed.
  • 🛑 Your Outback uses an electronic parking brake (EPB); you must retract it into service mode before compressing pistons.
  • 🛑 Work on one side at a time so you can reference the other side.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not usually required, but keep the key fob away and ignition OFF while parts are removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket

  • Torque wrench 1/2"
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet 3/8"
  • Ratchet 1/2"
  • Wire brush
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Caliper piston compression tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord
  • Rubber mallet
  • Micrometer or vernier caliper (specialty)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1
  • DOT 3 brake fluid - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the transmission to Park, and place wheel chocks at the front wheels.
  • Make sure the EPB is released before lifting the vehicle.
  • Have a plan to retract the EPB: either with a scan tool, or the built-in “maintenance/service mode” method described below.
  • A bungee cord holds the caliper safely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen rear wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket with a breaker bar 1/2" to loosen the rear lug nuts 1/2 turn while the car is still on the ground.

Step 2: Lift and support the rear safely

  • Lift the rear with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the correct rear lift point.
  • Set the car onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the wheels using a 21mm socket.

Step 3: Put the EPB into service (maintenance) mode

  • Scan tool method (recommended): Use a scan tool (specialty) to command EPB Maintenance Mode / Retract for the rear brakes.
  • Without a scan tool (switch method): Turn ignition ON (engine OFF). Press and hold the EPB switch to the RELEASE position. While holding, press and hold the brake pedal, and keep holding until the EPB indicator shows maintenance mode (typically a flashing/changed EPB lamp).
  • If your EPB does not clearly enter service mode, stop and use a scan tool to avoid EPB damage.

Step 4: Remove the rear caliper (outer assembly)

  • Turn the steering wheel straight and locate the rear caliper.
  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it using a bungee cord (do not let it hang by the brake hose).

Step 5: Remove old pads and hardware

  • Remove the pads from the bracket by hand; use a flathead screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
  • Remove pad clips/hardware from the bracket.
  • Clean the bracket pad “tracks” using brake cleaner and a wire brush.

Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • Torque to 65 Nm (48 ft-lbs) during reassembly.

Step 7: Remove the rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If it’s stuck, tap around the rotor hat using a rubber mallet until it breaks loose.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush and wipe clean so the new rotor sits flat.

Step 8: Install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove packing oil and wipe dry.
  • Slide the rotor onto the hub and hold it in place with one lug nut hand-tight (use a 21mm socket).

Step 9: Reinstall bracket and install new pad hardware

  • Reinstall the caliper bracket using a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 65 Nm (48 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new pad clips/hardware into the bracket.
  • Apply a thin film of brake lubricant (silicone brake grease) where the pad ears contact the clips.

Step 10: Compress the rear caliper piston

  • Confirm EPB is in service mode first.
  • Use a caliper piston compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston straight back into the caliper.
  • Slow pressure helps prevent seal damage.

Step 11: Install new pads and reinstall the caliper

  • Install the new pads into the bracket.
  • Set the caliper over the pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the other rear side

  • Repeat Steps 4–11 on the opposite rear wheel.

Step 13: Exit EPB service mode

  • Scan tool method: Use the scan tool (specialty) to command EPB Maintenance Mode / Apply (or “Close”).
  • Switch method: With ignition ON (engine OFF), pull and hold the EPB switch to the APPLY position until the EPB indicator returns to normal operation.

Step 14: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall wheels and snug lug nuts using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench 1/2": Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • With engine OFF, press the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons).
  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • Apply and release the EPB a few times to confirm normal operation.
  • Test drive at low speed first and verify there are no grinding noises or pulls.
  • Bed-in the pads: make 6–10 gentle stops from ~30 mph to 5 mph, with cool-down time between stops.
