🔧 Outback - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
This repair replaces the front windshield wiper blades on your Outback so the windshield clears properly in rain, mist, and road spray. The blades attach to the wiper arms with a small locking tab, so no disassembly is needed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working near the wiper arms.
- ⚠️ Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- ⚠️ Work carefully around the hood edge and windshield trim to avoid scratches.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Microfiber towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 17" - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Outback on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- 🧼 Make sure the windshield is clean enough that grit will not scratch the glass while you work.
- 🧤 Place a microfiber towel on the windshield under each wiper arm. A microfiber towel is a soft cloth that helps protect glass and paint from scratches.
- 📌 The driver-side blade is longer than the passenger-side blade, so keep the new blades separated before installation.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the Driver-Side Wiper Arm
- Put on safety glasses.
- Use your hand to gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays upright.
- Place a microfiber towel on the glass beneath the raised arm.
- Hold the arm firmly.
Step 2: Release the Old Driver-Side Wiper Blade
- Use your fingers to locate the small locking tab where the blade connects to the wiper arm.
- The locking tab is a small plastic catch that keeps the blade from sliding off.
- Press the locking tab with your thumb.
- While holding the tab, slide the old blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm until it releases from the hook.
- No torque spec applies because there are no bolts or screws.
Step 3: Remove the Old Driver-Side Wiper Blade
- Use your hand to pull the old blade completely off the J-hook end of the wiper arm.
- A J-hook is the curved hook-shaped end of the wiper arm that holds the blade.
- Keep one hand on the metal arm so it cannot fall onto the windshield.
Step 4: Install the New Driver-Side Wiper Blade
- Use your hand to position the new 26" driver-side front wiper blade under the J-hook.
- Slide the new blade upward into the hook until the locking tab clicks into place.
- Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Do not force the connector; it should slide in smoothly when aligned correctly.
Step 5: Lower the Driver-Side Wiper Arm
- Use your hand to slowly lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Keep the microfiber towel in place until the blade is resting safely on the glass.
- Remove the towel once the blade is down.
Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Wiper Blade
- Use your hand to lift the passenger-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Place the microfiber towel under the arm to protect the glass.
- Press the locking tab with your thumb.
- Slide the old blade downward and remove it from the J-hook.
- Use your hand to install the new 17" passenger-side front wiper blade.
- Slide it into the hook until you hear or feel a click.
- Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Slowly lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
Step 7: Check Blade Position
- Use your hand to confirm both blades sit flat against the windshield.
- Make sure the rubber wiping edges are not twisted or folded.
- Check that the longer 26" blade is on the driver side and the shorter 17" blade is on the passenger side.
✅ After Repair
- 💧 Spray windshield washer fluid and run the front wipers at low speed.
- 👀 Check for streaking, skipping, chatter, or loose movement.
- 🔒 If a blade moves oddly, turn the wipers OFF and recheck that the locking tab is fully clicked in.
- 🧼 Clean the windshield with glass cleaner if new blades leave light streaks at first.
