🔧 Outback - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

This repair replaces the used engine oil and oil filter in your Outback. Fresh oil protects the 3.6L flat-six engine from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool or warm engine, not a hot one. Hot oil can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Park on level ground so the oil drains correctly and the oil level reads accurately.
  • ⚠️ Always support your Outback with jack stands if you raise it. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves to protect your eyes and skin from used oil.
  • ⚠️ Used engine oil is hazardous. Collect it in a sealed container and recycle it properly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench 68mm 14-flute
  • Drain pan 8-quart minimum
  • Funnel with narrow spout
  • Floor jack rated 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil 5W-30 synthetic - Qty: 7 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🌡️ Let the engine run for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 📘 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness, measured in ft-lbs or Nm.
  • 🧰 A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that deforms when tightened and should be replaced each oil change.
  • ♻️ Have a clean container ready so you can take the used oil to a recycling center or parts store.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Outback at the front center jacking point.
  • Place the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to prevent movement.
  • Give the car a gentle shake.

Step 2: Open the Oil Fill Cap

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Open the hood by pulling the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Remove the engine oil fill cap by hand from the top of the engine.
  • Pull the dipstick up slightly by hand. This helps air enter while the old oil drains.

Step 3: Position the Drain Pan

  • Slide the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
  • The drain plug is on the bottom of the engine oil pan.
  • Use shop towels nearby for spills.

Step 4: Remove the Oil Drain Plug

  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish removing the plug carefully by hand while keeping pressure inward until the last thread releases.
  • Let the oil drain into the drain pan 8-quart minimum until it slows to a drip.
  • Keep your hand out of the oil stream.

Step 5: Replace the Drain Plug Washer

  • Use shop towels to wipe the drain plug clean.
  • Remove the old crush washer by hand from the drain plug.
  • Install the new oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug by hand.
  • Wipe the oil pan sealing surface with shop towels.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Thread the drain plug into the oil pan by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the bolt crooked.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the plug.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 44 Nm (32.5 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Move the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
  • Use the oil filter wrench 68mm 14-flute with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter counterclockwise.
  • Remove the filter by hand once loose.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter. A gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the filter.
  • Use shop towels to clean the filter mounting surface.

Step 8: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Lightly coat the new oil filter gasket with fresh engine oil 5W-30 synthetic using a gloved finger.
  • Thread the new engine oil filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
  • Tighten the filter by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
  • If using the oil filter wrench 68mm 14-flute and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench, tighten the filter to Torque to 14 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the filter.

Step 9: Add New Engine Oil

  • Place the funnel with narrow spout into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 6.5 quarts of engine oil 5W-30 synthetic.
  • Remove the funnel with narrow spout and install the oil fill cap by hand.
  • Push the dipstick fully back into place by hand.

Step 10: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off.
  • Use safety glasses and inspect underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Use shop towels to wipe any oil residue so new leaks are easy to spot.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Outback slowly to level ground with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Set the Final Oil Level

  • Wait 5 minutes so the oil can drain back into the oil pan.
  • Pull the dipstick by hand and wipe it clean with shop towels.
  • Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again to read the level.
  • Add engine oil 5W-30 synthetic through the funnel with narrow spout in small amounts until the oil level reaches the full mark.
  • Do not overfill. The typical refill amount with filter is about 6.9 quarts.

Step 13: Reset the Maintenance Reminder

  • Use the steering wheel controls or instrument panel controls to access the vehicle information display.
  • Select Maintenance > Engine Oil > Reset if your display has the maintenance menu.
  • If the maintenance menu is not enabled, record the mileage and reset your reminder manually using your preferred service log.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Recheck the oil level after the first short drive and top off if needed.
  • ✅ Look under your Outback for any drips after it sits for 10-15 minutes.
  • ✅ Make sure the oil fill cap and dipstick are fully seated.
  • ✅ Pour the used oil into sealed containers and recycle it with the old filter.
  • ✅ Keep a note of the date, mileage, oil type, and filter replacement.
