🔧 CR-V - Headlight Bulb Replacement

We’ll replace the headlight bulbs on your CR-V by going in from behind the headlight assemblies, inside the engine bay. This avoids taking the bumper off and is the same basic process on both sides.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always switch the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before working on bulbs to avoid short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine and exhaust cool completely; you’ll be leaning over the engine bay.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can make them burn out early.
  • ⚠️ Work in a well-lit area and set the parking brake so the CR-V cannot move.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may need to reset radio presets and clock, but battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 Latex or nitrile gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses
  • 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🧰 Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • 🧰 Work light or flashlight
  • 🧰 Clean lint-free cloth
  • 🧰 Rubbing alcohol wipe

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Low beam headlight bulbs (H11) - Qty: 2 Replace as a pair
  • 🔩 High beam headlight bulbs (9005 / HB3) - Qty: 2 Optional, if you want to do high beams too
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease for electrical connectors - Qty: 1 small tube

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧭 Park the CR-V on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the engine off.
  • 🧭 Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key or shut down the push-button ignition.
  • 🧭 Open the hood and use the hood prop rod to secure it fully open.
  • 🧭 Lay a clean towel over the front bumper to protect the paint while you lean over.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify low beam vs high beam bulbs

  • đź›  Stand in front of the CR-V and look at one headlight. The low beam on your LX is the inner projector-style lamp (closer to the grille). The high beam is the outer reflector-style lamp.
  • đź›  From inside the engine bay, look behind the headlight: the low beam H11 bulb will have a smaller round plastic cap/socket directly behind the projector; the high beam 9005 bulb is behind the other reflector.
  • đź›  Decide whether you’re replacing just the low beams, or both low and high beams. Process is almost identical for both.

Step 2: Gain access on the driver’s side

  • đź›  On the driver’s side, access is a little tighter because of the battery and fuse box. Use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pop up any plastic clips holding the small cover or air intake snorkel if it blocks your hand.
  • đź›  Use the flathead screwdriver (small) only if a clip is stubborn, prying under its center pin gently.
  • đź›  Move any loose plastic ducting slightly out of the way without disconnecting it fully. Make mental note how it sits.

Step 3: Remove the low beam bulb electrical connector

  • đź›  Reach behind the headlight and locate the low beam H11 bulb socket. It’s a round plastic base with a wire connector attached.
  • đź›  With your non-dominant hand stabilizing the socket, use your dominant hand’s thumb to press the small plastic tab on the connector.
  • đź›  While pressing the tab, pull the connector straight back off the bulb. If it’s stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling; do not twist yet.

Step 4: Remove the low beam bulb from the headlight

  • đź›  Grasp the plastic base of the bulb firmly.
  • đź›  Rotate the bulb base about 1/4 turn counterclockwise until it stops. No tool is needed here; just hand force.
  • đź›  Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing. Be careful not to bump the glass on anything.

Step 5: Prepare the new low beam bulb

  • đź›  Put on latex or nitrile gloves to avoid touching the bulb glass.
  • đź›  If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with a rubbing alcohol wipe and dry it with a clean lint-free cloth.
  • đź›  Check the new bulb’s tabs; they should match the old one (H11) in shape and size.
  • đź›  Place a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside the connector’s rubber area to help prevent corrosion. Very thin film is enough.

Step 6: Install the new low beam bulb

  • đź›  Line up the bulb’s plastic tabs with the slots in the headlight opening. The bulb only fits one way.
  • đź›  Push the bulb straight into the housing until fully seated.
  • đź›  Rotate the bulb base 1/4 turn clockwise until it stops firmly. You should feel it “lock” in place. No torque spec here; just snug by hand.

Step 7: Reconnect the low beam electrical connector

  • đź›  Align the connector with the new bulb’s terminals.
  • đź›  Push the connector straight onto the bulb base until it clicks. You should feel and often hear a small “click”.
  • đź›  Tug gently on the connector to confirm it’s locked and does not pull off easily.

Step 8: Replace the low beam on the passenger side

  • đź›  Repeat Steps 3–7 on the passenger side. Access is usually a little easier on this side because there’s more open space.
  • đź›  You may need to move a small plastic cover out of the way using the trim removal tool (plastic) and flathead screwdriver (small) just like the other side.

Step 9: Replace high beam bulbs (optional but recommended in pairs)

  • đź›  For each side, locate the high beam 9005/HB3 bulb socket behind the outer reflector lamp.
  • đź›  Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off, same as Step 3.
  • đź›  Rotate the bulb base 1/4 turn counterclockwise and pull it out.
  • đź›  Prepare the new bulb with gloves, avoiding glass contact, optionally adding a thin smear of dielectric grease inside the connector.
  • đź›  Insert the new bulb, rotate 1/4 turn clockwise to lock, and reconnect the connector until it clicks.
  • đź›  Repeat for the other side so both high beams match in brightness and color.

Step 10: Reinstall any covers or ducts you moved

  • đź›  Reposition any plastic air ducts or covers you moved earlier.
  • đź›  Push plastic clips back into their holes by hand. If needed, use the trim removal tool (plastic) or your thumb to press the center pin down to lock each clip.

âś… After Repair

  • âś… Start the CR-V or switch ignition to ON, then turn on the headlights.
  • âś… Check that both low beams light up and are the same brightness and color.
  • âś… Switch between low and high beams and confirm both sides work in each mode.
  • âś… At night, park about 3–4 meters from a wall to roughly confirm the beam pattern is even left-to-right.
  • âś… If a bulb does not light, recheck the connector orientation and that the bulb is fully locked in.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$200 (parts + labor) for both low beams, more if they also replace high beams.

DIY Cost: $25-$70 (parts only) for quality halogen bulbs for both low beams; $50-$110 if you also do both high beams.

You Save: $70-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-0.8 hours.
