🔧 Mustang - Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll be replacing the front wiper blades on your Mustang to restore clear visibility in rain and snow. This is a quick, beginner-friendly job and a great first DIY.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Turn the ignition off and remove the key so the wipers can’t move unexpectedly.
- 🔹Do not turn the wipers on while a blade is removed; the bare metal arm can crack the windshield.
- 🔹Gently lower the arm onto a towel if you need to rest it; the spring is strong.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹Flat towel or thick rag
- 🔹Small flathead screwdriver (3-4 mm tip)
- 🔹Work gloves
- 🔹Safety glasses

- 🔹Windshield washer fluid (all-season) - Qty: 1 gallon
- 🔹Glass cleaner - Qty: 1
- 🔹Microfiber towels - Qty: 2-3
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park the Mustang on level ground with plenty of space around the front.
- 🔹Set the parking brake and turn the ignition completely off.
- 🔹If you just drove, let the windshield cool so you’re not working on hot glass.
- 🔹Lay a towel on the lower edge of the windshield to protect the glass in case a wiper arm snaps down.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Position the wiper arms
- 🔹Stand on the driver side of the Mustang facing the windshield.
- 🔹With the ignition off, gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the glass until it locks in the raised position.
- 🔹Place your towel under the lifted arm so the glass is protected.
- 🔹No tools are needed for this step; just your hands.
Step 2: Identify the wiper arm type and release tab
- 🔹Your Mustang uses a “hook” style wiper arm (the end of the arm is shaped like a small hook).
- 🔹Look at the center of the wiper blade where it attaches to the arm; you’ll see a small plastic latch or tab.
- 🔹Use the small flathead screwdriver to gently pry up or press in this tab if your fingers can’t press it easily.
- 🔹Be gentle; the plastic can be brittle.
Step 3: Remove the old driver-side wiper blade
- 🔹While holding the release tab (with your finger or the small flathead screwdriver), slide the wiper blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it.
- 🔹Rotate the blade so it comes free from the hook at the end of the arm.
- 🔹Carefully remove the blade and immediately lower the bare arm onto the towel so it does not snap against the glass.
- 🔹There are no bolts or screws here, so no torque spec is required for this step.
Step 4: Prepare and orient the new driver-side blade
- 🔹Take the new driver-side wiper blade out of the package.
- 🔹Most replacement blades include adapters; pick the one labeled for “hook” or “J-hook” arms.
- 🔹If needed, snap that adapter onto the blade body by hand; no tools are needed.
- 🔹Make sure the blade curves naturally with the windshield, not backward.
Step 5: Install the new driver-side blade
- 🔹Lift the wiper arm back off the towel with one hand and support it firmly.
- 🔹Slide the hook of the arm through the opening in the new blade’s adapter.
- 🔹Pull the blade up toward the arm until the hook seats fully and you hear or feel a click.
- 🔹Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked; no tools are needed here.
- 🔹Carefully lower the arm and new blade back onto the windshield.
Step 6: Repeat removal on the passenger side
- 🔹Move to the passenger side and lift that wiper arm off the glass until it stays up.
- 🔹Place the towel under the arm to protect the glass.
- 🔹Locate the same style release tab on the passenger blade.
- 🔹Use the small flathead screwdriver to press or lift the tab if needed, then slide the blade down to unhook and remove it.
Step 7: Install the new passenger-side blade
- 🔹Prepare the new passenger blade with the correct hook-style adapter if it’s not already installed.
- 🔹Lift the arm from the towel and support it with one hand.
- 🔹Slide the arm’s hook through the adapter opening and pull the blade up until it clicks into place.
- 🔹Gently tug to be sure it’s secure.
- 🔹Lower the arm carefully back onto the glass.
Step 8: Clean the windshield and check your work
- 🔹Spray the windshield with glass cleaner and wipe with a microfiber towel to remove old wax, road film, and dirt.
- 🔹This helps the new blades work better and last longer.
- 🔹Look at both blades from outside: they should lie flat against the glass, with no twists or gaps.
- 🔹Again, there are no fasteners, so no torque specs are needed in this step.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Start the Mustang and use the washer function to wet the windshield.
- 🔹Turn the wipers on low speed and watch for smooth, quiet operation with no streaks or skipping.
- 🔹Check that both blades park in the correct position at the bottom of the windshield.
- 🔹If a blade seems loose or crooked, shut the car off, lift that arm, and re-seat the blade until it clicks.
- 🔹Top off the washer fluid if needed so you’re ready for bad weather.
