🔧 Explorer - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing your front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and reduces streaking and chatter. On your Explorer, the blades attach to the wiper arms with a common “J-hook” style connection, so it’s a quick DIY.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key (or keep the fob away) so the wipers can’t move unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield—place a towel on the glass to prevent cracks.
  • ⚠️ Avoid lifting the wiper arm past its normal range; it’s spring-loaded and can bend.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Step stool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Wiper blade size (verify before ordering) - Common fitments: Driver: 26", Passenger: 21" or Driver: 26", Passenger: 20" - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Use a microfiber towel to cover the lower windshield area where the wiper arm could fall.
  • Check the size printed on the old blades (often on a label or molded into the blade frame) so you buy the correct lengths.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect the windshield

  • Lay a microfiber towel on the windshield directly under the driver-side wiper.
  • Use a step stool if you need comfortable reach.

Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Lift the wiper arm away from the glass until it stays up.
  • Hold the arm firmly—spring tension is strong.

Step 3: Remove the old blade (J-hook release)

  • At the blade-to-arm connection, press the small release tab with your thumb (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • While holding the tab, slide the blade down toward the base of the wiper arm (toward the hood) to unhook it.
  • Rotate the blade slightly as needed so the “J” hook slips out.

Step 4: Install the new driver-side blade

  • Confirm the new blade’s adapter is set for a J-hook; most blades include multiple adapters. (An “adapter” is the small plastic piece that matches the blade to your wiper arm.)
  • Slide the new blade’s opening onto the J-hook and pull it upward until you hear/feel a click.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked.

Step 5: Lower the driver-side arm carefully

  • Guide the wiper arm down by hand until the blade rests on the glass.
  • Do not let it snap down.

Step 6: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Move the microfiber towel under the passenger wiper.
  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the passenger-side blade.

Step 7: Quick function check

  • Remove the microfiber towel and any tools from the cowl area.
  • Turn the ignition ON and briefly run the wipers with washer fluid to confirm smooth, quiet wiping.

âś… After Repair

  • Check that both blades wipe evenly with no streaks or skipping.
  • If a blade chatters, clean the windshield and the blade rubber with a microfiber towel and washer fluid.
  • Recheck that each blade is fully clicked onto the J-hook.
