Elantra N - Engine Oil & Filter Change 🛢️

Nice choice doing this yourself — this is a perfect first DIY job.

Quick check: Are you working with basic hand tools (socket set, jack and jack stands, drain pan), and do you have a flat, safe place to work? If yes, you’re good to follow the steps below.

Parts & Fluids Needed 📦

  • 🧴 Engine oil:
    • Spec: 0W-30, full synthetic, API SP or better (Hyundai recommends this for the N engine).
    • Capacity (with filter): ~5.3 qt (5.0 L) — start with ~4.8 qt, then top off.
  • 🧰 Oil filter: Spin-on canister type, Hyundai N 2.0T specific.
  • 🧰 Drain plug washer: New aluminum or crush washer for the oil pan drain bolt.

Tools Required 🔧

  • 🛠️ Floor jack and jack stands
    • Floor jack = hydraulic jack that lifts the car.
    • Jack stands = supports that safely hold the car up.
  • 🛠️ Wheel chocks (blocks behind wheels so the car can’t roll).
  • 🛠️ Socket set:
    • Likely 17 mm socket for the drain plug (Hyundai common size).
    • 10 mm socket for undertray bolts (if equipped).
    • Ratchet and short extension.
  • 🛠️ Torque wrench: Tool that lets you tighten bolts to a specific torque.
  • 🛠️ Oil filter wrench: Cap-style or band-style that fits your filter.
  • 🛠️ Drain pan: Large enough for at least 7 qt.
  • 🛠️ Funnel for clean filling.
  • 🛠️ Gloves and shop towels/rags.

Key Torque Specs 📏

  • 🧷 Engine oil drain plug: ~25–30 lb-ft (34–41 N·m)
  • 🧷 Oil filter: Hand-tight plus ~3/4 turn (or follow filter box spec, usually ~10–14 lb-ft)

Safety First ⚠️

  • 🛑 Work on a flat surface, in Park, parking brake ON.
  • 🛑 Never get under the car supported only by a jack — always use jack stands.
  • 🛑 Oil will be hot if the engine is warm; keep hands clear of the initial stream.

Step 1 – Prepare the Car 🚗

  • 🧰 Warm the engine slightly:
    • Start the engine and let it idle for 3–5 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 🧰 Park and secure:
    • Shift to P, set the parking brake.
    • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine.
    • This lets air in so oil drains more smoothly.

Step 2 – Lift the Front & Remove Undertray 🧱

  • 🧰 Lift the front:
    • Use the front center jacking point (usually on the front subframe behind the front bumper).
    • Lift until you can place jack stands under the pinch welds (the reinforced seams under each front door).
    • Lower the car gently onto the stands and give the car a small shake to confirm stability.
  • 🧰 Remove the engine undertray (splash shield), if equipped:
    • Use a 10 mm socket and/or Phillips screwdriver for bolts/clips.
    • Keep track of bolt locations; some may be different lengths.

Step 3 – Drain the Old Oil 🕳️

  • 🧰 Locate the oil pan and drain plug:
    • The oil pan is at the bottom of the engine; the drain plug is a single bolt at the lowest point.
  • 🧰 Position the drain pan under the plug, slightly toward the rear (oil shoots out at an angle at first).
  • 🧰 Loosen the drain plug:
    • Use your 17 mm socket and ratchet to crack it loose.
    • Finish unscrewing by hand while pressing inward slightly until the last thread, then pull away quickly.
  • 🧰 Let the oil drain completely:
    • Give it at least 5–10 minutes until it’s down to a slow drip.
  • 🧰 Install new crush washer on the drain plug.
  • 🧰 Reinstall the drain plug:
    • Thread it in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
    • Tighten with a torque wrench to 25–30 lb-ft. Do not overtighten; the pan is aluminum.

Step 4 – Replace the Oil Filter 🧴

  • 🧰 Locate the oil filter:
    • On the N 2.0T, it’s a spin-on filter accessible from below near the oil pan.
  • 🧰 Move the drain pan under the filter (some oil will spill).
  • 🧰 Remove the old filter:
    • Use your oil filter wrench to loosen it, then spin off by hand.
    • Check that the old rubber gasket is not stuck to the engine; if it is, peel it off.
  • 🧰 Prep the new filter:
    • Put a thin film of fresh oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter. This helps it seal and come off next time.
    • If the filter is vertical, you can add a little oil inside to reduce dry start (optional).
  • 🧰 Install the new filter:
    • Thread it on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
    • Then tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn (or follow the marking on the filter). No tools needed if you can get it snug.

Step 5 – Reinstall Undertray & Lower the Car 🔩

  • 🧰 Clean up:
    • Wipe any spilled oil from the oil pan, drain plug, and filter area.
  • 🧰 Reinstall the undertray:
    • Use the original bolts/clips; snug them firmly but don’t overtighten.
  • 🧰 Lower the car:
    • Jack the car slightly, remove jack stands, then lower fully to the ground.

Step 6 – Fill with Fresh Oil 🧪

  • 🧰 Add new oil:
    • Place a funnel in the oil filler opening on top of the engine.
    • Pour in about 4.8 qt (4.5 L) to start.
  • 🧰 Reinstall the oil filler cap and make sure it’s snug.
  • 🧰 Start the engine:
    • Let it idle for 30–60 seconds; watch for the oil pressure warning light to go out.
    • Check under the car for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
  • 🧰 Shut off the engine and wait 3–5 minutes for oil to settle.
  • 🧰 Check the dipstick:
    • Pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert fully, then pull again.
    • Oil level should be between LOW and FULL, ideally near FULL.
    • If low, add oil in small amounts (about 0.2–0.3 qt at a time) and recheck.

Step 7 – Reset the Service Interval in the Cluster 📱

  • 🧰 On your Elantra N (digital cluster):
    • Turn ignition to ON (engine can be running or not).
    • Use the steering wheel buttons to go to the “User Settings” or “Setup” menu.
    • Navigate to “Service Interval”.
    • Select “Reset” or set the next interval (e.g., 5,000 mi or as you prefer).

Step 8 – Dispose of Old Oil Responsibly 🌍

  • 🧰 Pour used oil into the empty oil containers or a sealed jug.
  • 🧰 Take used oil and the old filter to an auto parts store or recycling center; most accept it for free.

Tips & Tricks 💡

  • 🧰 Lay cardboard under the work area to catch drips.
  • 🧰 Write the date and mileage on the filter or a note under the hood.
  • 🧰 Always double-check the drain plug and filter for leaks after your first short drive.
