Crosstour - Water Pump Replacement 🔧

I’ll walk you through this carefully. Two quick questions to tailor the steps:

  • 🧩 Is your Crosstour 2WD (front-wheel drive) or AWD?
  • 🧰 Do you have a basic socket set and a floor jack with jack stands?

If you’re ready now, you can proceed; I’ll note where AWD differs.

What you’ll need 🧰

  • 🛠️ Tools
    • 3/8" and 1/2" drive socket sets (8–19 mm), extensions
    • Torque wrench (10–80 N·m / 7–60 lb-ft range)
    • Breaker bar (for tight bolts; long handle)
    • Serpentine belt tool or 14 mm wrench (low-profile) for the belt tensioner
    • Trim clip remover (forked prying tool for plastic clips)
    • Drain pan (coolant safe), funnels, shop towels
    • Pry tool or small flat screwdriver
    • Jack + jack stands (support the car safely)
  • 🧩 Parts
    • Water pump (J35Y V6, with gasket/O-ring)
    • Serpentine belt (recommended while you’re in there)
    • Honda Type 2 coolant (premix; about 1.4–1.9 gal for refill/bleed)
  • ⚠️ Safety
    • Cool engine only. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
    • Disconnect negative battery cable before wrenching near the belt.
    • Support the vehicle with stands; never rely on a jack.

Torque specs 📏

  • 🔩 Water pump bolts: 12 N·m (8.7 lb-ft)
  • 🔩 Belt tensioner pivot bolt: 54 N·m (40 lb-ft)
  • 🔩 Battery terminal (negative): 5 N·m (44 in-lb)
  • 🔩 Engine undercover fasteners: snug only (don’t strip clips)

Prep and access 🧼

  • 🧯 Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🧊 Remove the radiator cap to depressurize. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain (driver lower side) and open the petcock to drain coolant. Close when done.
  • 🛡️ Raise the front and put on jack stands. Remove the front lower engine undercover/splash shield (clips and 10 mm bolts).

Belt removal 🎡

  • 🧭 On the passenger side, note or photo the belt routing diagram (usually on the core support). Snap a pic.
  • 🔧 Use a 14 mm wrench or belt tool on the tensioner hex. Rotate clockwise to relieve tension and slide the belt off the alternator pulley. Let the tensioner return slowly. Remove the belt from the rest of the pulleys.

Water pump removal 💧

  • 🧰 The pump is mounted on the front of the engine behind the belt drive (low passenger side). Place rags underneath for drips.
  • 🔩 Remove the water pump pulley bolts (10 mm). If the pulley spins, hold it with a strap wrench or have a helper hold the belt on while you crack them loose before removing the belt. Take the pulley off.
  • 🔩 Remove the water pump bolts (usually 6 small bolts). Note lengths/locations.
  • 🗡️ Gently pry the pump free. More coolant will drain—catch it. Remove the old pump and gasket/O-ring.
  • 🧽 Clean the mating surface on the engine with plastic scraper and a lint-free rag. No gouging; keep debris out.

Install the new pump ✅

  • 🧴 Lightly coat the new gasket/O-ring with fresh coolant for lubrication. Do not use RTV unless the OEM gasket calls for it; this pump uses a formed gasket.
  • 📐 Position the pump. Hand-thread all bolts first.
  • 🧭 Torque the pump bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern to 12 N·m (8.7 lb-ft).
  • 🔩 Refit the pulley. Snug its bolts, then final-tighten evenly to 12 N·m (8.7 lb-ft).

Reinstall belt 🪢

  • 🔄 Route the new or existing belt per the diagram. Leave it off the alternator last.
  • 🧰 Rotate the tensioner clockwise, slip the belt over the alternator, and slowly release. Check each rib is seated in every pulley groove. Mis-seated belts squeal.

Refill and bleed coolant 🌡️

  • 🧪 Close the radiator drain. Mix is premixed Honda Type 2—pour into the radiator until full, then fill the reservoir to the MAX line.
  • 🔌 Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🚗 Set the cabin heater to MAX heat, fan low. Start the engine and let it idle. Top up the radiator as the level drops. Squeeze the upper radiator hose to burp air.
  • 📈 Bring to operating temp until the radiator fan cycles on/off twice. Install the radiator cap.
  • 🧴 After a short drive, let cool fully. Recheck reservoir; top up to MAX if needed.

AWD notes (if applicable) 🧷

  • 🛡️ Additional lower splash shields may be present. Remove for access.
  • 🧰 Clearance is tighter around the right axle and subframe—use slim tools. Procedure and torques are the same.

Post-checks ✅

  • 🔍 Inspect for leaks around the pump weep hole and gasket area.
  • 🔊 Listen for belt chirp; re-seat if needed.
  • 🌡️ Watch coolant temp; should stay steady at mid-gauge.

Tips & tricks 🧠

  • 🧯 Dispose of old coolant properly. It’s toxic and attractive to pets.
  • 🧵 If bolts feel gritty, chase threads with a nylon brush; don’t over-torque.
  • 🧰 Consider replacing the belt tensioner and idler if the belt was noisy or has high miles.
