🔧 F-150 - Power Steering Pump Replacement (Not Applicable: EPAS System)

Your F-150 does not use a hydraulic power steering pump. It uses Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS), which is an electric motor and control module built into the steering gear (rack), so there’s no pump, belt, or power steering fluid to replace.

If you’re having steering problems (heavy steering, warning light, no assist), the usual fix is diagnosis and sometimes EPAS steering gear replacement plus calibrations.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the truck on jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental EPAS movement.
  • ⚠️ Keep the steering wheel centered and locked; do not let it spin with the intermediate shaft disconnected (can damage the clockspring, the ribbon cable for the airbag).
  • ⚠️ After steering gear work, you typically need a steering angle calibration and a front-end alignment.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Lug nut socket 21mm
  • Socket set 8mm-24mm
  • Wrench set 8mm-24mm
  • Breaker bar 1/2" drive
  • Torque wrench 10-250 ft-lbs
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Pry bar
  • Tie rod end puller (specialty)
  • Punch set
  • Hammer
  • Paint marker
  • Scan tool with Ford EPAS/PSCM functions (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • EPAS steering gear (rack) assembly - Qty: 1
  • Steering intermediate shaft pinch bolt (replace if required) - Qty: 1
  • Outer tie rod end nuts (replace if required) - Qty: 2
  • Front underbody shield fasteners/clips (replace as needed) - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Center the steering wheel and keep it centered (use a seat belt looped through the wheel to hold it in place).
  • Disconnect the battery using a 10mm socket on the negative terminal and isolate the cable so it can’t spring back.
  • Plan for an alignment after the repair; even small changes can cause tire wear.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts using a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar.
  • Lift the front with a floor jack and set it onto jack stands at the frame points.
  • Remove the front wheels with the 21mm lug nut socket.

Step 2: Remove underbody shields (if equipped)

  • Remove splash shields using a socket set 8mm-13mm and a trim clip removal tool.
  • Set hardware aside in a tray. Keep clips grouped by location.

Step 3: Disconnect the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles

  • Remove the tie rod end nut using the correct size from your socket set.
  • Use a tie rod end puller (specialty) to separate the tie rod from the knuckle (this tool presses it apart without hammering the joint).
  • Do not hit the threaded stud directly; you can ruin the threads.

Step 4: Mark and disconnect the steering intermediate shaft

  • Use a paint marker to mark the relationship between the intermediate shaft and steering gear input.
  • Remove the pinch bolt using the correct size from your socket set and wrench set.
  • Slide the shaft off the steering gear input. Use a pry bar gently if needed.

Step 5: Disconnect EPAS electrical connectors

  • Locate the steering gear electrical connector(s).
  • Release locks carefully and unplug by hand; use a pick from a punch set only if needed to lift a tab.
  • Inspect for corrosion or water intrusion before reassembly.

Step 6: Remove the steering gear mounting hardware

  • Support the steering gear with one hand or a helper.
  • Remove steering gear mounting bolts using a breaker bar and the correct size from your socket set.
  • Remove the gear from the truck, guiding it out carefully around suspension components.
  • Torque note: Reinstall fasteners to Ford factory specification using a torque wrench. (Specs vary by steering gear/fastener type.)

Step 7: Install the new EPAS steering gear

  • Position the new gear into place and hand-start all mounting bolts using your socket set.
  • Tighten evenly, then final tighten using a torque wrench to Ford factory specification.
  • Reconnect electrical connector(s) until they click/lock.

Step 8: Reconnect the intermediate shaft (keep wheel centered)

  • Align your paint marks and slide the shaft back onto the input.
  • Install the pinch bolt using your socket set and final tighten using a torque wrench to Ford factory specification.
  • Verify the steering wheel is still centered and hasn’t rotated.

Step 9: Reattach tie rod ends

  • Insert tie rod studs into the steering knuckles.
  • Install nuts using your socket set, then tighten using a torque wrench to Ford factory specification.

Step 10: Reinstall shields and wheels, lower the truck

  • Reinstall underbody shields using your socket set 8mm-13mm and trim clip removal tool.
  • Install wheels and snug lug nuts using a 21mm lug nut socket.
  • Lower the truck off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Final-tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench to Ford factory specification.

Step 11: Restore power and perform required calibrations

  • Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.
  • Use a scan tool with Ford EPAS/PSCM functions (specialty) to clear codes and run steering calibrations (commonly steering angle/center learn).
  • Get a professional alignment as soon as possible.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and confirm you have normal steering assist with no warning messages.
  • With the truck stationary, turn lock-to-lock slowly and listen for clunks or binding.
  • Road test at low speed first; verify the steering wheel is centered.
  • Scan for codes again using a scan tool with Ford EPAS/PSCM functions (specialty).
  • Complete a front-end alignment to prevent tire wear.
