🔧 Wrangler - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives key accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C. Replacing a cracked, noisy, or glazed belt helps prevent a sudden loss of charging, steering assist, or overheating.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; hot pulleys can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, hair, and clothing away from the belt path.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine while hands/tools are near pulleys.
  • ⚠️ If you remove any engine covers, secure them before starting.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but remove the key and keep it in your pocket.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 15mm serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • 15mm combination wrench
  • Flashlight
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, transmission in neutral, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the hood is securely propped.
  • Find the belt routing diagram (usually a sticker in the engine bay). If it’s missing, take a clear photo of the current routing before removing the belt.
  • A “tensioner” is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Inspect the belt routing and pulleys

  • Use a flashlight to locate the belt routing diagram and visually trace the belt around each pulley.
  • Check the belt for cracks across the ribs, missing chunks, or shiny/glazed areas.
  • Look at each pulley for wobble or damaged ribs.

Step 2: Relieve belt tension

  • Place a 15mm serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 15mm combination wrench on the belt tensioner’s hex fitting.
  • Rotate the tensioner smoothly to release tension. Hold it steadily—spring force is strong.
  • Move slowly; don’t let the tensioner snap back.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • While holding the tensioner with the 15mm serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 15mm combination wrench, slide the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley (often an upper smooth idler pulley).
  • Carefully let the tensioner return to its resting position (don’t release it suddenly).
  • Remove the belt completely from all pulleys by hand.

Step 4: Install the new belt (route first, tension last)

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys following the under-hood diagram, leaving one easiest pulley for last.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in ribbed pulleys, and the smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.
  • Use the flashlight to confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in every grooved pulley.

Step 5: Apply tension and finish installation

  • Rotate the tensioner again using the 15mm serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 15mm combination wrench.
  • Slip the belt over the last pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner so it applies tension to the belt.
  • Re-check every pulley groove with the flashlight; a belt that’s one rib off can shred quickly.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 20–30 seconds. It should run centered with no hopping or wandering.
  • Listen for squealing or slapping sounds. If you hear noise, shut off the engine and re-check belt seating on every pulley.
  • Take a short test drive, then re-check belt alignment again with the flashlight.
