š§ Wrangler - Front Window Regulator Replacement
Your Wranglerās front window regulator is the lift mechanism that moves the glass up and down. When it fails, the window may drop, bind, move crooked, or the motor may run but the glass wonāt move.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per door)
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Keep fingers clear of the regulator while testingāscissor/cable mechanisms can pinch hard.
- ā ļø Support the window glass at all times; unsecured glass can drop and shatter.
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental window operation.
- ā ļø Use eye protection when drilling rivets (if equipped).

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front window regulator assembly - Qty: 1
- Front window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included)
- Door trim panel retainers/clips - Qty: 1 set
- Water shield butyl tape - Qty: 1
- Regulator rivets - Qty: 1 set (only if your door uses rivets)
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, key out, and keep the door fully supported while working.
- Lower the window to about halfway if it still moves; this usually exposes the glass-to-regulator fasteners.
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it.
- Butyl tape is stickyākeep rags handy.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the interior door trim panel
- Use a trim removal tool set to carefully pry off the small trim pieces around the door handle/pull (work slowly so you donāt crack the plastic).
- Remove visible screws using a Phillips screwdriver, Torx T20 screwdriver, and/or Torx T30 screwdriver (Wrangler front doors commonly use Torx fasteners).
- Use a trim removal tool set to pop the panel clips free around the edges.
- Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the top edge by the window.
- Disconnect electrical connectors using a pick tool (a pick tool is a small hook used to release locking tabs without breaking them).
Step 2: Remove the water shield (vapor barrier)
- Use a plastic razor blade scraper to separate the water shield from the door without tearing it.
- Peel it back slowly; save it for reinstallation.
- Donāt use metal bladesāeasy to cut the shield.
Step 3: Secure the window glass in the up position
- Manually raise the glass fully (or carefully guide it up if it dropped).
- Use painters tape (1.5") to tape the glass to the door frame in multiple strips.
- For extra support, have a helper hold the glass while you loosen the clamps.
Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator
- Locate the glass-to-regulator clamps/bolts through the access holes.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension for ratchet to loosen/remove the fasteners.
- Once free, confirm the glass is still secured with painters tape (1.5") so it cannot fall.
- Torque to 89 in-lb (10 Nm) on reassembly for glass clamp bolts.
Step 5: Unplug the window motor (if attached to the regulator)
- Disconnect the motor connector using a pick tool and your fingers.
- Move the harness aside so it canāt snag.
Step 6: Remove the regulator/motor assembly from the door
- If your regulator is bolted in: remove mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension for ratchet.
- If your regulator is riveted in: wear safety glasses and drill rivet heads with a drill with 1/4" drill bit, then push the rivet bodies through.
- Carefully maneuver the regulator out through the largest access opening.
- Torque to 105 in-lb (12 Nm) on reassembly for regulator mounting bolts.
Step 7: Transfer the motor (only if your new regulator doesnāt include it)
- Remove the motor screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver (or the correct Torx size present).
- Install the motor onto the new regulator and tighten evenly.
- Torque to 55 in-lb (6 Nm) for motor fasteners.
- Start all screws by hand to avoid stripping.
Step 8: Install the new regulator assembly
- Place the new regulator into the door cavity.
- If bolted: install all bolts finger-tight first, then tighten using a 10mm socket and torque wrench (in-lb).
- If riveted: install new rivets using a rivet gun (specialty) (a rivet gun squeezes and locks rivets to clamp parts together).
- Torque to 105 in-lb (12 Nm) for regulator mounting bolts (if equipped).
Step 9: Reattach the glass to the regulator
- Lower the glass carefully into the regulator clamps (remove some tape as needed, but keep the glass supported).
- Install/tighten the glass clamp bolts using a 10mm socket and torque wrench (in-lb).
- Torque to 89 in-lb (10 Nm) for glass clamp bolts.
Step 10: Function test before reassembly
- Reconnect the motor connector by hand.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Run the window up/down while watching the tracks and cables for smooth movement.
- If it binds, stop immediately and re-check alignment and fasteners.
- Disconnect the battery again with a 10mm socket before reinstalling the water shield and trim.
Step 11: Reinstall the water shield and door panel
- Press the water shield back into place using fresh water shield butyl tape where needed.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors by hand (verify each lock tab clicks).
- Hang the door panel on the top edge, then press clips in around the perimeter.
- Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver, Torx T20 screwdriver, and/or Torx T30 screwdriver.
Step 12: Final battery connection
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and snug it securely.
ā After Repair
- Run the window fully down and fully up 3 times to confirm smooth travel and proper sealing.
- Listen for clicking/grinding; if heard, stop and re-check that the glass is seated correctly in the clamps.
- Confirm the water shield is fully sealed; an unsealed shield can cause water leaks into the cabin.
