🔧 CR-V - Rear Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the serviceable rear light bulbs on your CR-V: the rear turn signal bulbs in the body-mounted lamps and the reverse (backup) bulbs in the tailgate lamps. On the Touring trim, the tail/brake running lights are LED and part of the lamp assembly, so you can’t change those bulbs separately.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Make sure the engine is off, the transmission is in P, and the parking brake is set.
  • ⚠️ Turn off all exterior lights and remove the key from the vehicle before working on bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support removed lamps with one hand so you don’t scratch the paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🛠️ Plastic trim removal tool set
  • 🛠️ Small flathead screwdriver (4–5 mm tip)
  • 🛠️ Work light or flashlight
  • 🛠️ Clean nitrile gloves
  • 🛠️ Safety glasses

A plastic trim tool is a non-metal tool used to pry panels without scratching.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 2 (left and right, replace in pairs)
  • 🔩 Rear reverse/backup bulb (921 clear) - Qty: 2 (left and right, replace in pairs)
  • 🔩 Replacement plastic push clips for tailgate trim - Qty: 2–4 (optional, in case any break)
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 small tube

On your Touring, tail/brake running lights are LED modules, not bulbs.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your CR-V on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn off all lights and remove the key or switch ignition to OFF.
  • Open the tailgate fully so you have access to the side and inner lamps.
  • If you recently drove, let the rear lamps cool for a few minutes so you don’t burn your fingers.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulbs you can replace

  • Open the tailgate and look at the rear lights.
  • The lamps fixed to the body (on each rear corner) contain the rear turn signal bulbs that are replaceable.
  • The smaller lamps on the tailgate contain the reverse (backup) bulbs that are replaceable.
  • The glowing “C-shaped” tail/brake lights are LEDs; if one of those fails, the whole lamp usually must be replaced, not just a bulb.

Step 2: Remove the left body-mounted rear lamp (for turn signal bulb)

  • With the tailgate open, locate the two visible screws on the inner edge of the left rear lamp.
  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove both screws. Set them somewhere safe.
  • Place one hand on the outer edge of the lamp for support.
  • With your other hand, grip the inner edge and gently pull the lamp straight rearward. Do not pry sideways; it is held by hidden pins that release by pulling straight back.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool at the inner edge to help nudge it backward while supporting the lamp with your other hand.
  • Pull straight back, not toward the side.

Step 3: Remove the left rear turn signal bulb

  • Look at the back of the removed lamp and locate the bulb holder closest to the bottom (rear turn signal).
  • Grasp the bulb socket and twist it counterclockwise about ¼ turn by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp.
  • Gently pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. If it is stuck, wiggle it a bit while pulling.

Step 4: Install the new left rear turn signal bulb

  • Put on your clean nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass with bare fingers.
  • If you have it, apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the bulb’s metal contacts only, not the glass.
  • Push the new 7440 amber bulb straight into the socket until it clicks or feels fully seated.
  • Align the tabs on the socket with the slots in the lamp opening.
  • Insert the socket into the lamp and twist it clockwise about ¼ turn until it stops.

Step 5: Reinstall the left body-mounted rear lamp

  • Align the plastic guide pins on the back of the lamp with the holes in the body.
  • Gently push the lamp straight forward (toward the front of the car) until you feel the pins snap into place.
  • Reinstall the two screws with the Phillips #2 screwdriver. Honda does not publish a torque for these; tighten them just snug by hand. Do not overtighten or you can crack the plastic.

Step 6: Repeat for the right rear turn signal bulb

  • Repeat Steps 2–5 on the right side body-mounted lamp to replace the right rear turn signal bulb with the second new 7440 amber bulb.
  • Always replace bulbs in pairs so brightness matches.

Step 7: Access the left tailgate lamp (for reverse bulb)

  • Stand at the rear with the tailgate open and look at the inside trim panel directly behind the left tailgate lamp.
  • Locate any small rectangular plastic access cover or nearby trim clips.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool or the small flathead screwdriver (wrapped with tape to avoid scratches) to gently pry off the access cover or loosen the edge of the trim enough to reach the bulb socket.
  • If you remove a push clip, gently pry up its center first with the small flathead screwdriver, then pull the whole clip out.

Step 8: Remove the left reverse (backup) bulb

  • Look through the opening and find the bulb socket going into the back of the left tailgate lamp (this is the reverse light).
  • Reach in, grasp the socket, and twist it counterclockwise about ¼ turn by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out.
  • Pull the old 921 bulb straight out of the socket.

Step 9: Install the new left reverse (backup) bulb

  • With your nitrile gloves on, insert the new 921 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Align the socket tabs with the tailgate lamp opening.
  • Insert the socket and twist clockwise about ¼ turn until it stops.
  • Reinstall any trim or access cover using the plastic trim removal tool to press clips back in place.

Step 10: Repeat for the right reverse (backup) bulb

  • Repeat Steps 7–9 on the right side tailgate lamp to replace the right reverse bulb with the second new 921 bulb.

Step 11: Test all rear lights

  • Close the tailgate.
  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
  • Turn on the parking lights and have a helper check:
    • Both rear turn signals flash amber.
    • Both LED tail/brake lights glow normally.
  • Shift to R (with your foot firmly on the brake) and have your helper confirm both reverse lights are on and equally bright. Then shift back to P.
  • If a light does not work, re-check that the bulb is seated correctly and the socket is fully twisted into place.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm that all rear lights (tail, brake, turn, and reverse) are working properly with a helper or by using a wall reflection at night.
  • Make sure all trim panels and access covers are fully clipped back into place so nothing rattles.
  • Keep your old bulbs in a small box in the car for short-term emergency spares if they are still working.
