🔧 Tucson - Side View Mirror Replacement

You’ll remove the inside door trim, unplug the mirror wiring, unbolt the mirror, and install the new one. This is usually done after a cracked housing, broken glass, or a loose mirror that won’t hold position.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)

Assumption: your Tucson has power mirrors (likely heated/turn-signal/BSD).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable before door work; the door may contain a side airbag.
  • ⚠️ After disconnecting the battery, wait at least 3 minutes before unplugging door connectors.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror when removing nuts so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • ⚠️ Keep screws/clips organized; mixing them can crack the door panel.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Trim removal tool set (plastic)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (small)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm range)
  • Pick tool (small)
  • Magnetic parts tray
  • Painters tape
  • Panel clip pliers

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (LH or RH, correct options) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel clips - Qty: 5-10
  • Mirror mounting gasket (if not included with mirror) - Qty: 1
  • Mirror cover/cap (paint-to-match, if needed) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lower the window glass halfway so you can grip the door panel safely.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the battery negative cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • Apply painters tape along the mirror/door edge to help prevent paint scratches.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior sail panel (mirror triangle)

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pry off the small triangular cover at the front upper corner of the door panel.
  • If there’s a small tweeter speaker connector, unplug it by pressing the lock tab with a pick tool (small).

Step 2: Remove the door panel screws

  • Pop off the handle/trim caps using a flat-blade screwdriver (small) (wrap the tip with tape to avoid marring).
  • Remove visible screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Some screws may be 10mm heads; remove those with a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.

Step 3: Release the door panel clips

  • Start at the bottom edge. Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pop the panel clips free.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use panel clip pliers to pull it straight out. (Clip pliers are fork-shaped pliers that pull clips without snapping them.)

Step 4: Lift the door panel up and disconnect wiring

  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug electrical connectors (window switch, courtesy light, etc.) by pressing the lock tabs using a pick tool (small).
  • Disconnect the inside door handle cable:
    • Use a flat-blade screwdriver (small) to flip the cable retainer open.
    • Lift the cable end out of the handle.

Step 5: Unplug the mirror connector

  • Find the mirror wiring connector near the mirror mounting area and unplug it.
  • Tip: press the tab, don’t pull wires.

Step 6: Remove the side mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror with one hand on the outside of the door.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the mirror mounting nuts (typically 3 nuts).
  • Set nuts into a magnetic parts tray.

Step 7: Remove the mirror from the door

  • Guide the wiring harness and grommet out through the hole and remove the mirror.
  • Remove any stuck gasket material and wipe the area clean.

Step 8: Install the new mirror

  • Feed the wiring harness through the door opening and seat the mirror/gasket flat against the door.
  • Hand-thread the nuts first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten with a 10mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect mirror wiring and quick-function check

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket and tighten snugly.
  • Turn ignition ON and check: mirror adjustment, heating (if equipped), turn signal (if equipped), and blind-spot indicator (if equipped).
  • Turn ignition OFF and disconnect the battery negative cable again with a 10mm socket before reassembling the door panel.

Step 10: Reinstall the door panel

  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors and the handle cable.
  • Hang the door panel on the top lip first, then press clips in around the perimeter using your palm.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket (whichever was removed).
  • Reinstall the sail panel by pressing it back on by hand.

Step 11: Final battery connection

  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • If the auto-up/down window loses function, cycle the window fully down and fully up using the switch to relearn.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive and listen for wind noise around the mirror at 40–60 mph.
  • Verify mirror operation: adjust all directions, fold (if equipped), heat (if equipped), turn signal (if equipped).
  • Check that the door panel is fully seated (no rattles) and all switches work.
  • If a warning light appears after battery reconnect, recheck all door connectors are fully clicked in.
