Step-by-step J-hook wiper blade removal and installation with tools, blade sizes, and safety tips

🔧 Forte - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll remove the old front wiper blades from the wiper arms and snap on new blades. Fresh blades improve visibility and help prevent streaking and windshield scratching.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep the wiper arm from snapping onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- ⚠️ Work with the ignition OFF and wipers OFF.
- ⚠️ Set a towel on the windshield where the arm could land.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 24" or 26", Passenger: 16" - Qty: 2
- Windshield washer fluid - Qty: 1 gallon
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- Lift each wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Place a clean shop towel on the windshield under each arm as a safety cushion.
- Tip: Measure the old blades to confirm length.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the blade lengths
- Use a tape measure (12 in minimum) to measure the old driver and passenger blades end-to-end.
- Match the new blades to those lengths (commonly 16" passenger, and 24" or 26" driver).
Step 2: Remove the old driver-side blade (J-hook style)
- Lift the driver wiper arm up and keep the clean shop towel under it.
- Rotate the blade so it sits about 90° to the wiper arm.
- Find the small release tab where the blade meets the hook.
- Press the tab with your fingers; if it’s tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver. (A flathead screwdriver is a small straight-tip tool used to press tabs.)
- Slide the blade downward toward the base of the arm to unhook it, then pull it off.
Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade
- Hold the new blade and line up the center adapter with the hook on the wiper arm.
- Slide the hook into the adapter until you hear/feel a click.
- Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked.
Step 4: Repeat for the passenger-side blade
- Use the same process on the passenger side: lift arm, press tab, slide off, click new blade on.
- Keep the clean shop towel in place the whole time.
Step 5: Lower the arms carefully
- Remove the clean shop towel.
- Lower each wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly, using your hand to guide it down.
✅ After Repair
- Fill washer fluid if needed using windshield washer fluid.
- Start the car and run the washers and wipers for 10–15 seconds.
- Check for chatter, streaking, or a blade that isn’t sitting flat.
- Tip: Clean glass improves new blade performance.
