🔧 Wrangler - Side View Mirror Replacement

On your Wrangler, the side mirror is bolted to the door and (if equipped) plugged into the door wiring for power adjustment/heat. The job is mostly removing the interior door trim panel to reach the three mirror nuts and the electrical connector.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (first time)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and keep fingers clear of sharp door-panel edges.
  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging any door connectors.
  • ⚠️ If your mirror is powered/heated, disconnect the negative battery cable to reduce the chance of a short.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand while removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torx T20 bit
  • Torx T30 bit
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • Pick tool (small)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb, 20–200 in-lb range)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Masking tape
  • Shop towel
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (left or right, correct option for your Wrangler) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel push-clips - Qty: 2-10 (only if any break)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Lower the window fully (gives you a safe handhold while lifting the door panel).
  • Park on level ground and keep the transmission in Park.
  • Use masking tape along the painted edge below the mirror to protect paint.
  • If equipped with power/heated mirrors: use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior mirror trim (“sail panel”)

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pry off the small triangular trim at the top-front of the door (inside, by the mirror).
  • Work slowly around the edges until the clips release. Pull straight outward to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the interior door trim panel

  • Remove any visible screws in the pull handle/armrest area using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (some doors use Torx—if yours does, use a Torx T20 bit).
  • Remove any remaining door-panel screws along the edges using a Torx T20 bit and/or Torx T30 bit (varies by door panel style).
  • Use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to pop the door-panel push-clips free around the perimeter.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge, then pull it slightly away.

Step 3: Disconnect electrical connectors (if equipped)

  • If your Wrangler has power windows/locks/mirrors, unplug the connectors using a pick tool (small) to lift the locking tabs, then pull straight out.
  • If a connector is stubborn, use needle-nose pliers only on the connector body (not the wires).
  • Set the door panel aside on a shop towel so it doesn’t get scratched.

Step 4: Unplug the mirror connector (powered/heated mirrors)

  • Locate the mirror wiring connector near the top-front of the door.
  • Release the lock with a pick tool (small), then unplug it by hand.

Step 5: Remove the mirror retaining nuts

  • Support the mirror on the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the three mirror nuts.
  • Keep the nuts if the new mirror does not include replacements.

Step 6: Remove the old mirror

  • From outside the door, pull the mirror straight away from the door.
  • If there’s a gasket, make sure it comes off cleanly and doesn’t stick to the door.

Step 7: Install the new mirror

  • Position the new mirror and gasket on the door.
  • Start all three nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug them evenly.
  • Final tighten using a torque wrench (in-lb, 20–200 in-lb range): Torque to 80 in-lb (9 N·m).

Step 8: Reconnect mirror wiring (if equipped)

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks (use your hands; no tools needed).
  • Gently tug to confirm it’s locked.

Step 9: Reinstall the door trim panel

  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors by hand (listen/feel for a click).
  • Hook the top of the door panel over the window ledge, then press the panel into place.
  • Press the perimeter clips in firmly by hand.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and/or Torx T20 bit/Torx T30 bit (whichever you removed).

Step 10: Reinstall the sail panel

  • Align the clips and press the triangular trim back on by hand until it snaps in.

Step 11: Restore battery power (if disconnected)

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it snugly.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Verify the mirror is stable and doesn’t wobble when you push on it.
  • If powered: turn ignition ON and test mirror adjustment in all directions.
  • If heated/turn-signal equipped: confirm the feature works (if your mirror has it).
  • Check that the window and door lock switches operate normally after reconnecting.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$650 (parts + labor, per mirror)

DIY Cost: $80-$350 (parts only, per mirror)

You Save: $170-$300+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8-1.3 hours.
