🔧 Outback - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Outback, each headlight has separate bulbs for low beam and high beam. The job is mostly about gaining access behind the headlight housing, then swapping the bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes; they get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
  • ⚠️ If you remove the battery for access, disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent shorts.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the bulb’s rubber seal/dust cap is fully seated to prevent moisture in the headlamp.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension for ratchet
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip remover
  • 10mm wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to identify which bulb you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam).
  • If your hands don’t comfortably fit behind the driver-side headlight, plan to remove the battery for room.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight and look behind each headlight: the low beam is typically the bulb you use most at night; the high beam is the brighter “brights” bulb.
  • If unsure, turn lights on briefly to identify.

Step 2: Create working room (passenger side)

  • Remove the air intake snorkel/duct if it blocks access.
  • Use a trim clip remover to pop up the plastic clips, then lift the duct out.
  • If there are screws, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 3: Create working room (driver side, if tight)

  • If access is tight, remove the battery hold-down.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal and move it aside (do not let it spring back).
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the battery hold-down nuts and lift the hold-down off.
  • Lift the battery out carefully and set it on the ground (keep it upright).
  • Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) when reinstalling the battery hold-down nuts.

Step 4: Remove the dust cover (if equipped)

  • Behind the headlight, remove the rubber/plastic dust cover by hand (twist or pull depending on cover style).
  • Use a flashlight so you don’t drop it.

Step 5: Unplug the bulb connector

  • Grip the connector at the back of the bulb and pull straight back.
  • If there’s a lock tab, press it with your thumb (no tools if possible).

Step 6: Remove the old bulb

  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise by hand about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Keep note of the bulb’s “ears/tabs” alignment so the new one goes in the same way.

Step 7: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing matching the tabs, then rotate clockwise to lock.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks/seats fully.

Step 8: Reinstall the dust cover and any removed parts

  • Reinstall the dust cover fully (this keeps moisture out).
  • Reinstall the air duct using the trim clip remover (to reset clips) and any screws with the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • If you removed the battery: reinstall it, tighten the hold-down, then reconnect terminals (positive first if removed, negative last).
  • Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) for the battery hold-down nuts.

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the opposite-side bulb the same way so both sides match in brightness/color.
  • New bulbs look best as a matched pair.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides work on low beam and high beam.
  • Check that the dust covers are fully seated and no wiring is pinched.
  • If you disconnected the battery, verify clock/radio presets if applicable.
