🔧 Outback - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear outer tail lamp, twist out the turn-signal socket, and swap the bulb. This is usually straightforward, but some lamp versions use an LED turn signal (no replaceable bulb), in which case the lamp assembly must be replaced.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition OFF and make sure all exterior lights are OFF before starting.
  • Let the lamps cool if they were just on; the bulb and housing can be hot.
  • Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten bulb life if you touch the glass.
  • Support the tail lamp as you remove it so it doesn’t scratch paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - match the type printed on the old bulb - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - match the type printed on the old bulb - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs for even brightness

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for access to the screws on the inboard side of the tail lamp.
  • Have your new bulb(s) ready, but don’t open the package until you confirm the old bulb type.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you have a replaceable bulb

  • Open the liftgate and look at the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Use a flashlight to find the two retaining screws.
  • If your turn signal is an LED module (no twist-out bulb socket), you will not be able to replace just a bulb; the rear combination lamp assembly is replaced as a unit.

Step 2: Remove the rear tail lamp (outer lamp on the quarter panel)

  • Remove the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Grip the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it break free. Pull straight back, not outward

Step 3: Remove the turn-signal socket

  • Locate the turn-signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp housing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand, then pull it out of the housing.
  • (A “socket” is the plastic holder that locks into the lamp and has the wiring attached.)

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on clean nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth before installing.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the lamp’s locating pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight forward until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, tightening them snugly by hand (do not overtighten).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2-5 for the opposite rear tail lamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test both rear turn signals and the hazard lights.
  • Confirm the lamp is seated evenly and there are no gaps around the housing.
  • If the turn signal “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), recheck the bulb seating and correct bulb type.
