🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the vents inside your Camry. You’ll be replacing the old filter located behind the glove box with a fresh one so your A/C and heater blow cleaner air and work more efficiently.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15–25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • âś… Park on a level surface and set the parking brake. đźš—
  • âś… Turn the ignition off and remove the key so the blower fan doesn’t turn on while you work. 🔑
  • âś… Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you lower it. 📦
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight
  • Clean rag
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter (with A/C, under-dash type) - Qty: 1
  • Interior cleaning wipes - Qty: 1 pack

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Camry on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn off the A/C system and remove the key from the ignition.
  • Open the front passenger door fully for more space.
  • Remove all items from the glove box so it can drop down freely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box

  • Open the glove box door fully by pulling the handle.
  • Remove any books, papers, or other items inside so nothing gets in the way.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small arm (this is the damper that slows the glove box when it opens).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side of the glove box, locate the small plastic arm attached to the side of the box.
  • Use your fingers or a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry the damper arm off the glove box peg.
  • Pull straight outward, not up or down.
  • Let the damper arm hang freely; don’t force or twist it.

Step 3: Release the glove box stoppers so it can drop down

  • Look at both inner sides of the glove box opening; you’ll see plastic stoppers that catch on the dash frame.
  • With one hand on each side, gently squeeze the sides of the glove box inward so the stoppers clear the dash frame.
  • Let the glove box swing down and hang lower, exposing the area behind it.
  • Support the glove box with one hand as it drops.

Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter cover

  • Behind the lowered glove box, use your flashlight to find a rectangular plastic door in the center; this is the cabin filter cover.
  • The cover will have small tabs on each side or at one edge.

Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter cover

  • Using your fingers or a trim removal tool (plastic), gently press or pry the tabs on the filter cover.
  • Pull the cover straight toward you to remove it.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get lost.

Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Grasp the front edge of the old filter and slowly slide it straight out toward you.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently side to side while pulling.
  • Note the direction of the “AIR FLOW” arrow printed on the old filter (usually pointing downward on this Camry).
  • Remember this arrow direction for the new filter.

Step 7: Clean the filter housing area

  • Use a clean rag to gently wipe any visible dust or leaves inside the filter slot.
  • You can also lightly tap the area with the rag to dislodge debris.
  • Do not push debris deeper into the air duct; wipe it outward toward you.

Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the new filter for an “AIR FLOW” arrow on the side.
  • Orient the filter so the arrow points the same direction as the old one (on most 2013 Camry, arrow points down).
  • Carefully slide the new filter into the slot, keeping it level so it doesn’t bend or crush.
  • Push it in until it is fully seated and flush with the opening.

Step 9: Reinstall the cabin filter cover

  • Position the filter cover back over the opening.
  • Align the side tabs with their slots and push the cover straight in until it clicks into place.
  • Use your flashlight to confirm the cover is fully locked on both sides.

Step 10: Reattach and close the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
  • Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward again so the stoppers go past the dash frame, then release them so they rest on the frame.
  • On the right side, line up the damper arm with the peg on the glove box.
  • Press the damper arm onto the peg firmly by hand until it clicks into place.
  • Open and close the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly.
  • No bolts are used here, so there are no torque specs required on this job.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn on the A/C or heater.
  • Cycle through fan speeds and modes (face, feet, defrost) to ensure good airflow from all vents.
  • Listen for any unusual noises behind the glove box; if you hear anything, re-check that the filter is seated and the cover is clipped fully.
  • Return your items to the glove box.
  • Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months, or sooner in dusty conditions.
