🔧 Rogue - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the headlight bulbs from behind the headlamp assemblies under the hood. Space is tight, but it’s very doable with patience and the right bulbs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the lights cool for at least 10 minutes; bulbs and housings can get very hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulbs with bare fingers; oil can cause them to burn out early.
- ⚠️ Work on level ground with the parking brake set.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you’re nervous around live connectors.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park the Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch headlights OFF.
- Open the hood using the hood release inside, then the safety latch at the front.
- If you want extra safety, loosen the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket and move it aside.
- Put a towel over the front bumper edge to avoid scratches as you lean in.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulbs are which
- 🛠️ Stand in front of your Rogue and look at one headlight assembly.
- The low beam (main night driving light) is the inner, larger reflector with an H11 bulb.
- The high beam (bright “flash-to-pass” light) is the outer reflector with a 9005 bulb.
- Behind the headlight, you’ll see round plastic bulb bases with wiring connectors going into them.
Step 2: Access the driver-side low beam bulb
- 🛠️ From the engine bay, look behind the driver-side headlight.
- You’ll see the low beam bulb base with a connector going into it, slightly towards the center of the vehicle.
- Move any flexible wiring or hoses gently out of the way with your hand. Don’t pull hard.
Step 3: Unplug the low beam connector
- 🛠️ Press the small plastic tab on the bulb connector with your thumb.
- While holding the tab, pull the connector straight back from the bulb. If stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling; you can use needle-nose pliers on the plastic body only.
- Do not pull on the wires themselves.
Step 4: Remove the low beam bulb
- 🛠️ Grasp the plastic base of the bulb firmly.
- Twist the bulb base about 1/4 turn counterclockwise (to the left) until it releases.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- Note the orientation tabs on the bulb base so you can match them with the new bulb.
Step 5: Prepare the new low beam bulb
- 🛠️ Put on disposable nitrile gloves to avoid touching the glass.
- Take the new H11 bulb out of the package, holding it only by the plastic base.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with a clean shop towel and alcohol or a glass wipe.
- Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside the connector opening (not on the bulb pins).
Step 6: Install the new low beam bulb
- 🛠️ Align the tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing.
- Slide the bulb straight into the opening until it fully seats.
- Twist the bulb base clockwise (to the right) about 1/4 turn until it stops. It should feel snug.
- There is no torque spec here; just hand-tight until it locks and does not wiggle.
Step 7: Reconnect the low beam connector
- 🛠️ Push the wiring connector straight onto the new bulb’s terminals.
- Listen or feel for a “click” from the locking tab.
- Gently tug the connector to confirm it’s fully seated.
Step 8: Repeat low beam replacement on passenger side
- 🛠️ Move to the passenger-side headlight and repeat Steps 2–7 for the other H11 low beam.
- On the passenger side, you may need to move the air intake duct slightly; it’s flexible plastic. Do not disconnect anything, just flex it gently for room.
Step 9: Replace the high beam bulbs (optional but recommended)
- 🛠️ Behind the headlight, locate the high beam bulb base (outer bulb).
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off, just like the low beam.
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise 1/4 turn and pull the 9005 bulb out.
- Install the new 9005 bulb: align tabs, insert, twist clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks.
- Repeat for the other side.
Step 10: Reconnect battery (if disconnected)
- 🛠️ Place the negative battery terminal back on the post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to snug the clamp bolt.
- Torque to 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs) – just snug, not crushing.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the ignition to ON and switch the headlights to low beam; check both sides are lit.
- ✅ Switch to high beam and confirm both high beams work.
- ✅ With the Rogue parked ~7.5 m (25 ft) from a wall on level ground, verify the light beams are even and not pointing way up into the sky.
- ✅ Close the hood securely and make sure no tools or packaging are left in the engine bay.
