🔧 Equinox - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the cabin air filter behind the glove box on your Equinox. This filter cleans the air that comes through the vents, catching dust and pollen. Changing it keeps the AC and heater working well and makes the air inside fresher.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15–25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and remove the key before starting.
  • 🛑 Set the parking brake so the vehicle cannot roll.
  • 🛑 Do not force or bend the glove box too hard; the plastic hinges can crack.
  • 🛑 If you have dust allergies, wear a mask and gloves when handling the old filter.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧤 Nitrile or mechanic gloves
  • 🔦 Flashlight
  • 🪛 Plastic trim removal tool set (specialty)
  • 🧽 Clean rag or microfiber cloth
  • 📦 Small handheld vacuum cleaner

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 📦 Cabin air filter (HVAC interior filter) - Qty: 1
  • 🧴 Interior cleaner or mild disinfectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔇 Turn off all HVAC settings (fan, AC, heater) before shutting the engine off.
  • 🧺 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
  • 💡 Put the front seats back a bit so you have room to kneel in front of the glove box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box

  • 🧤 Put on nitrile or mechanic gloves to keep your hands clean.
  • 🔦 Use a flashlight to see inside the glove box area clearly.
  • Open the glove box fully and remove all items inside.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper cord

  • On the right side of the glove box, look for a small plastic arm with a cord attached. This is the glove box damper (it slows the glove box when opening).
  • Gently push the damper arm toward the glove box using your hand, then slide the cord end off the small pin.
  • If it is tight, use a plastic trim removal tool set (specialty) to carefully pry the cord clip off the pin. Do not use metal tools on plastic.

Step 3: Release the glove box side stops

  • The glove box has built-in plastic stops on both sides that prevent it from dropping all the way down.
  • With the glove box open, press inward on the left and right side walls of the glove box near the top.
  • As you squeeze, the side walls will move past the stops; gently let the glove box swing down toward the floor.
  • Support it with one hand so it doesn’t drop suddenly.

Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter access door

  • Behind the lowered glove box, you’ll see the HVAC housing (a black plastic box).
  • In the center of that housing, find a rectangular door with small side clips. This is the cabin air filter door.
  • Use your flashlight to clearly see the clips and orientation of the door.

Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter door

  • On each side of the door, there is a small tab or clip.
  • With your fingers, press both side clips inward at the same time to release them.
  • If the clips are stiff, use a plastic trim removal tool set (specialty) to gently push the tabs inward. Be gentle to avoid breaking tabs.
  • Pull the door straight off and set it aside.

Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Look at how the old filter is sitting and note the direction of the airflow arrow printed on the filter edge.
  • Grasp the front edge of the filter with your fingers and slowly pull it straight out.
  • If it catches, wiggle it slightly side to side while pulling.
  • Place the old filter in a trash bag so dust and debris don’t spread.

Step 7: Clean the filter housing area

  • Use a small handheld vacuum cleaner to gently remove leaves, dust, or debris from the housing opening.
  • Wipe around the opening with a clean rag or microfiber cloth to remove any remaining dust.
  • You can lightly spray interior cleaner or mild disinfectant spray onto the rag and wipe inside for a fresh smell. Do not soak the housing.

Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Take the new cabin air filter out of its packaging.
  • Find the airflow arrow printed on the side of the new filter.
  • On your Equinox, the arrow should point downward (toward the floor) when installed, because air flows from top to bottom through the filter.
  • Carefully slide the new filter into the slot, keeping the arrow direction correct.
  • Push it in until it is fully seated and flush with the housing.

Step 9: Reinstall the cabin air filter door

  • Align the bottom edge of the filter door with the lower part of the housing opening.
  • Push the top of the door toward the housing until both side clips snap into place.
  • Use your flashlight to confirm both sides are fully clipped and the door is not crooked.

Step 10: Reattach and close the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
  • Press inward on both side walls again so the side stops can move past their catches, then release them so they sit back on the stops.
  • On the right side, reattach the damper cord: line up the cord end with the pin and push it on by hand.
  • Open and close the glove box a few times to check for smooth operation.
  • Return your items to the glove box.

✅ After Repair

  • 🌀 Start the engine and turn on the fan at different speeds to make sure air flows normally through the vents.
  • 👃 Check for any unusual smells or noises; air should be clean and quiet.
  • 📅 Make a note to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months, or more often in dusty areas.
  • 🧹 If you see a lot of debris on the old filter, consider checking it more frequently in the future.
