🔧 Accord - Rear Turn Signal Lamp Replacement
On your Accord, the rear turn “bulbs” are built into the tail lamp as sealed LED modules. That means you can’t change just the bulb—you have to replace the entire rear lamp assembly if a turn signal fails.
This guide walks you through removing the rear outer tail lamp (where the turn signal is) and installing a new one.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Always switch the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before unplugging any lights.
- 🔹Keep the parking brake set and the car in Park so it doesn’t move while you work in the trunk.
- 🔹Rear lamps use plastic alignment pins—pull the lamp straight back to avoid breaking them.
- 🔹Disconnecting the 12V battery negative cable is optional, but safer when working around wiring.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹10mm socket
- 🔹1/4" drive ratchet
- 🔹3" socket extension
- 🔹Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
- 🔹Flathead screwdriver (small)
- 🔹Torque wrench (inch-lb or low-range ft-lb)
- 🔹Work gloves
- 🔹Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔹Rear outer combination tail lamp assembly – left (driver side) - Qty: 1 (only if that side’s turn signal is out)
- 🔹Rear outer combination tail lamp assembly – right (passenger side) - Qty: 1
- 🔹Trunk trim clips - Qty: 4–6 (optional but recommended in case any break)
- 🔹Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔹Turn off the ignition and all lights.
- 🔹Open the trunk fully so you can reach the back of the tail lamp.
- 🔹If you want maximum safety, disconnect the negative battery cable:
- Loosen the negative terminal nut with a 10mm socket and move the cable off the post.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear of the tail lamp
- Open the trunk and look at the side you’re repairing (left or right) near the tail lamp area.
- Gently pull back the trunk side trim or remove any round plastic clips holding the trim using the trim removal tool or a flathead screwdriver.
- Fold the trim inward so you can see the backside of the outer tail lamp and its mounting studs.
- Work slowly so you don’t crack the trim.
Step 2: Remove tail lamp mounting nuts
- Locate the metal studs with nuts holding the tail lamp to the body (usually two 10mm nuts).
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and ratchet to remove these nuts.
- Set the nuts aside in a safe spot so they don’t fall into the trunk lining.
- Keep track of any rubber washers on the studs.
Step 3: Disconnect the lamp electrical connector
- Find the electrical connector going to the tail lamp.
- Press the locking tab on the connector with your thumb or a flathead screwdriver and pull the connector straight off the lamp.
- Do not pull on the wires; hold the plastic plug body.
Step 4: Remove the outer tail lamp assembly
- From outside the car, place one hand on the outer edge of the lamp and one closer to the trunk opening.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward (toward you) to release the plastic locating pins from the body.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling straight back—do not pry against the painted body with metal tools.
- Plastic pry tool is safer on paint.
Step 5: Prepare the new lamp assembly
- Compare the new lamp to the old one: same shape, same connector location, same mounting points.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector pins on the new lamp to help prevent corrosion.
Step 6: Install the new outer tail lamp
- Align the locating pins on the new lamp with the holes in the body.
- Gently press the lamp into place until it sits flush with the body panels.
- From inside the trunk, start the 10mm nuts by hand on the lamp studs to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to snug them down evenly.
- Then tighten to spec with a torque wrench: Torque to 8–10 Nm (6–7 ft-lbs).
- Just snug—do not overtighten; studs can snap.
Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Plug the vehicle harness connector back into the new lamp until you hear or feel a click.
- Gently tug on the connector to make sure it’s locked in place.
Step 8: Reinstall trunk trim
- Fold the trunk side trim back into its normal position.
- Reinstall any plastic clips you removed, pressing them in by hand.
- If a clip broke, replace it with a new one from your trunk trim clips pack.
Step 9: Reconnect battery (if you disconnected it)
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal nut securely, but don’t overtighten.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Turn the ignition ON.
- 🔹Activate the left and right turn signals one at a time and walk to the back to confirm the new LED turn signal is flashing normally.
- 🔹Check the tail light, brake light, and hazard flashers on that side to be sure everything works.
- 🔹Close the trunk and confirm that the lamp sits evenly with the body and there are no gaps.
