🔧 Grand Cherokee - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Left & Right)

You’ll access the back of each headlight housing (usually through the front wheel-well liner) and swap the bulb, then reinstall everything. The key is installing the new bulb without touching the glass and making sure the bulb is fully seated and locked.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the headlight housing cool before touching it.
  • If your Grand Cherokee has HID/Xenon headlights, they use a high-voltage igniter—turn lights off and disconnect the battery negative cable before opening the bulb/igniter area.
  • Support the vehicle with jack stands if you remove a wheel; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (30-150 ft-lb range)
  • 7mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (Halogen type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Low beam headlight bulb (HID/Xenon type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Wheel liner push clips - Qty: 4-10

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch fully OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • If you have HID/Xenon headlights: disconnect the battery negative cable before you start.
  • Plan to replace both sides (left and right) so the color/brightness matches.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which headlight system you have

  • Use a flashlight to look at the headlight lens: HID/Xenon setups often have “HID”/“Xenon” labeling and a very crisp blue-white color; halogen is typically warmer yellow-white.
  • If you already bought bulbs, match the replacement bulb type to what came out of the headlight.

Step 2: Lift the front corner and remove the wheel (recommended for space)

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts 1/2 turn while the tire is still on the ground.
  • Use a floor jack to lift the front corner at the proper jacking point, then set the vehicle on jack stands and place wheel chocks.
  • Remove the lug nuts with the 21mm socket and take off the wheel.
  • A trim clip removal tool is a forked plastic tool used to pop plastic fasteners out without breaking them.

Step 3: Pull back the front wheel-well liner to access the headlight

  • Use a 7mm socket or 8mm socket (varies by fastener) with a 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the small screws along the front edge of the wheel-well liner.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push clips as needed.
  • Carefully peel the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlight. Don’t crease the liner hard.

Step 4: Remove the bulb cover or access cap (if equipped)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the round cover/cap on the back of the headlight.
  • Remove the cap by hand (typically a twist to unlock), and set it aside where it won’t get dirty.

Step 5: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Wear nitrile gloves and use your hand to press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently—do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Remove the old bulb

  • For most halogen bulbs: rotate the bulb base counterclockwise by hand to unlock, then pull it out.
  • For HID/Xenon bulbs: make sure the battery negative is disconnected, then unlock the bulb/retainer by hand and remove the bulb straight out. Go slow—HID parts are fragile.

Step 7: Install the new bulb

  • Keep nitrile gloves on and avoid touching the glass.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots, insert fully, then rotate clockwise to lock.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector by pushing it on until it clicks/seats firmly.

Step 8: Reinstall the cap and wheel-well liner

  • Reinstall the rear cap by hand and make sure it is fully sealed to keep moisture out.
  • Reposition the liner and reinstall screws using the 7mm socket or 8mm socket with the 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall any push clips using the trim clip removal tool to line them up, then press them in by hand.

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts

  • Install the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Use a 1/2" drive torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2-9 for the other headlight so both bulbs match.

âś… After Repair

  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative cable and tighten securely.
  • Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides illuminate and match in color.
  • Check high beams, low beams, and turn signals to confirm you didn’t unplug the wrong connector.
  • If a new bulb looks dim or flickers, recheck that it’s fully locked and the connector is fully seated.
