How to Replace Taillight Bulbs and LED Assembly on a 2019 Nissan Rogue
Step-by-step DIY guide to change rear bulbs, swap the LED taillight assembly, required tools, parts, safety tips, and torque specs

🔧 Rogue - Taillight Bulb / Lamp Replacement
On your Rogue SV, the red running/brake “taillight” portion in the outer lens is an integrated LED, not a simple bulb. If that red light is out, you must replace the whole taillight assembly. The reverse (white) bulb and rear turn signal bulb are replaceable, so below are instructions for both replacing bulbs and, if needed, the full taillight assembly on each side.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸Always switch the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on lights to avoid shorts.
- 🔸Let the area cool if the lights were just on; bulbs and lenses can get hot.
- 🔸Do not touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- 🔸If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets and clock settings.
- 🔸Work on level ground and keep the transmission in Park with the parking brake set.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔸10mm socket
- 🔸1/4" drive ratchet
- 🔸6" socket extension
- 🔸Trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🔸Flathead screwdriver (small)
- 🔸Work gloves
- 🔸Safety glasses
- 🔸Clean lint-free cloth
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔸Outer rear combination lamp assembly (left) - Qty: 1 (only if LED taillight is bad)
- 🔸Outer rear combination lamp assembly (right) - Qty: 1 (only if LED taillight is bad)
- 🔸Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440 type) - Qty: 2
- 🔸Reverse light bulb (W16W / 921 type) - Qty: 2
- 🔸Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
- 🔸Replacement plastic trim clips - Qty: 4–6 (in case any break)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🔸Park the Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch ignition OFF.
- 🔸Open the rear liftgate fully to access the taillight mounting bolts and inner trim.
- 🔸If you prefer extra safety, disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket, then tuck the cable aside so it can’t spring back.
- 🔸Lay a clean cloth on the bumper to protect paint while you handle the lamp assemblies.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify what you’re replacing
- 🔸Have a helper turn the lights on and press the brake pedal while you stand behind the Rogue.
- 🔸If the red running/brake part of the outer lens is out, that is an LED module; you must replace the whole outer lamp assembly on that side.
- 🔸If only the rear turn signal (flashing amber) or reverse light (white when in Reverse) is out, you can just replace that bulb.
- 🔸Turn ignition OFF again before starting work.
Step 2: Access the outer taillight mounting bolts
- 🔸Open the liftgate and look at the side interior trim just inside the opening, behind each taillight.
- 🔸Use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pop off the small rectangular access cover near the taillight on the interior trim.
- 🔸Behind the cover, you’ll see one or two bolts holding the taillight; use a 10mm socket with 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" socket extension to remove these bolts. Keep bolts in a safe spot
Step 3: Remove the outer taillight assembly
- 🔸From outside the Rogue, stand behind the taillight you’re working on.
- 🔸Grip the lens with both hands. Pull it straight rearward, then slightly outward. It is held by plastic locator pins that can be snug.
- 🔸If it feels stuck, use the trim removal tool (plastic) between lamp and body and gently pry while pulling straight back. Do not twist the lamp hard
- 🔸Once free, support the lamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.
Step 4: Disconnect wiring and locate bulb sockets
- 🔸On the back of the taillight, locate the main electrical connector.
- 🔸Use a flathead screwdriver (small) to gently lift the locking tab and unplug the connector.
- 🔸You will see twist-in bulb sockets for the rear turn signal and reverse light (if equipped in that housing, depending on exact build).
Step 5: Replace the rear turn signal bulb (if needed)
- 🔸Find the amber turn signal bulb socket; it is usually labeled or has an amber-tinted area in the lens.
- 🔸Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand and pull it out of the lamp.
- 🔸Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- 🔸Using a clean lint-free cloth, push the new rear turn signal bulb (7440) straight into the socket until it clicks. Avoid touching the glass
- 🔸Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the bulb base if available.
- 🔸Reinsert the socket into the taillight and turn it clockwise until it locks.
Step 6: Replace the reverse light bulb (if in outer lamp)
- 🔸Locate the reverse light bulb socket (white lens section) on the taillight rear.
- 🔸Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull it out.
- 🔸Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out.
- 🔸Install the new reverse light bulb (W16W / 921) using the clean lint-free cloth, then push it in firmly.
- 🔸Reinstall the socket into the lens and turn clockwise to lock.
Step 7: If the LED taillight is bad – swap the entire lamp
- 🔸If the red LED section failed, you already have the lamp off from Steps 2–3.
- 🔸With the old lamp unplugged, set it aside.
- 🔸Plug the main connector into the new outer rear combination lamp assembly until it clicks.
- 🔸Transfer any bulb sockets (turn/reverse) from the old lamp to the new one if they are not pre-installed, using your hands and flathead screwdriver (small) if needed to lift tabs.
Step 8: Reinstall the outer taillight assembly
- 🔸Align the plastic locator pins on the back of the taillight with the holes in the body.
- 🔸Push the lamp straight forward into the body until it seats flush.
- 🔸From inside, reinstall the mounting bolts using the 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet. Snug them firmly; they are small: Torque to ~5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs).
- 🔸Snap the interior access cover back into place by hand.
Step 9: Replace inner liftgate bulbs (if your reverse light is in the liftgate)
- 🔸Open the liftgate and locate the inner lamp assemblies on the liftgate itself.
- 🔸Use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry off the small plastic cover or trim piece behind the inner lamp.
- 🔸You may see one or two screws; remove them using the 10mm socket or flathead screwdriver (small) depending on head style.
- 🔸Pull the inner lamp straight out from the liftgate to access the bulb socket.
- 🔸Turn the reverse light socket counterclockwise, remove, swap in the new reverse light bulb (W16W / 921), then reinstall the socket and lamp as in previous steps.
Step 10: Repeat for the other side
- 🔸Repeat Steps 2–9 on the opposite side so both taillights match in brightness and color.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)
- 🔸Reattach the negative battery terminal using the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- 🔸Tighten until snug: Torque to ~5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- 🔸Turn ignition ON and have a helper press the brake pedal, switch on parking lights, use turn signals, and shift briefly into Reverse (foot firmly on brake, parking brake applied) while you stand behind the Rogue.
- 🔸Check that both red tails, brake, turn signals, and reverse lights work on both sides and are equally bright.
- 🔸Verify all lamps sit flush and there are no gaps to let in water.
- 🔸If you disconnected the battery, reset the clock and radio presets as needed.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
