How to Replace Rear Taillight Bulbs on a 2013 Honda CR-V
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, bulb types, safety tips, and testing instructions for outer and inner tailgate lights

🔧 CR-V - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the rear taillight bulbs by removing the rear lamp on the body and accessing the small lamps in the tailgate. This restores proper night visibility and brake/parking lights on your CR-V.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Always turn the ignition off and remove the key before working on lights.
- 🔹Switch the light switch to the OFF position so nothing is powered.
- 🔹Let bulbs cool down for a few minutes; they can be hot if just used.
- 🔹Wear gloves so skin oils do not get on the glass of new bulbs.
- 🔹Work on flat, level ground and set the parking brake.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 🔹Flat trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🔹Small flathead screwdriver 3-4 mm tip
- 🔹Work light or flashlight
- 🔹Mechanic gloves
- 🔹Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔹Outer taillight brake/parking bulb (7443 dual-filament) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
- 🔹Outer taillight turn signal bulb (7440) - Qty: 2 (optional, while you’re in there)
- 🔹Inner tailgate parking bulb (W5W/168/194 style) - Qty: 2 (optional, while you’re in there)
- 🔹Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 tube
- 🔹Shop towels - Qty: 1 pack
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park your CR-V on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔹Turn off the headlights and remove the key from the ignition.
- 🔹Open the tailgate fully so you can reach both taillight areas.
- 🔹If you have cargo in the rear, move it out so panels can be opened.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the tailgate and locate the outer taillight screws
- 🔹Open the tailgate all the way.
- 🔹On the inside edge of each rear outer taillight (the lamp mounted on the body, not on the tailgate), find the two Phillips screws holding the lamp to the body.
- 🔹Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to loosen each screw. They may stay captured in the plastic; that is normal.
Step 2: Remove the outer taillight assembly
- 🔹After removing the two screws, the lamp is still held by plastic pins that push straight sideways into the body.
- 🔹Place one hand on the outer edge of the lamp and the other near the inner edge.
- 🔹Gently pull the taillight straight rearward, not outward, to release the pins. If it’s stuck, use a flat trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry between the lamp and body near the inner edge.
- 🔹Move slowly so you don’t crack the lens or the paint. Rock it gently, don’t yank.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb sockets on the outer taillight
- 🔹With the lamp pulled back, you’ll see round plastic bulb sockets in the rear of the lamp.
- 🔹Note which socket is which:
- 🔹Upper/center socket: usually brake/parking light (7443 bulb).
- 🔹Lower socket: usually turn signal (7440 bulb).
- 🔹Grip the brake/parking light socket and twist it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- 🔹Do the same for the turn signal socket if you are replacing that bulb too.
Step 4: Replace the outer taillight brake/parking bulb
- 🔹Hold the socket in one hand and gently pull the old 7443 dual-filament bulb straight out with the other hand.
- 🔹If it’s stuck, use the shop towels to get a better grip and wiggle it gently side to side.
- 🔹Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the metal contacts in the socket (optional but helpful to prevent corrosion).
- 🔹Without touching the glass, push the new 7443 bulb straight into the socket until it seats firmly.
- 🔹Repeat this for the other outer side brake/parking bulb.
Step 5: (Optional) Replace the outer turn signal bulb
- 🔹Pull the old 7440 bulb straight out of its socket.
- 🔹Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the socket contacts.
- 🔹Install the new 7440 bulb by pushing it straight in firmly.
Step 6: Reinstall the outer taillight assembly
- 🔹Insert each bulb socket back into its hole in the taillight housing.
- 🔹Twist each socket 1/4 turn clockwise by hand to lock it in place.
- 🔹Align the plastic pins on the back of the lamp with the holes in the body.
- 🔹Press the lamp straight into place until you feel it click in.
- 🔹Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to tighten the two mounting screws. Snug them firmly but do not overtighten to avoid cracking the plastic.
Step 7: Access the inner tailgate taillight bulbs (if replacing)
- 🔹Standing at the open tailgate, look at the inner lamps mounted directly on the tailgate (these usually contain running/parking lights and sometimes reverse lights).
- 🔹On the inside trim of the tailgate, locate the small rectangular plastic covers behind each inner lamp.
- 🔹Use the small flathead screwdriver 3-4 mm tip to gently pry off each cover. Use a cloth to protect plastic.
Step 8: Replace inner tailgate parking bulbs
- 🔹Through the opening, locate the small bulb socket (usually the W5W/168/194 style parking bulb).
- 🔹Twist the socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- 🔹Pull the small glass bulb straight out of the socket.
- 🔹Apply a pinhead-sized amount of dielectric grease to the contacts.
- 🔹Push the new W5W/168/194 bulb straight into the socket until secure.
- 🔹Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist 1/4 turn clockwise to lock.
- 🔹Snap the plastic trim cover back in place by hand.
- 🔹Repeat for the other side if you are replacing both.
Step 9: Function test all rear lights
- 🔹Close the tailgate gently.
- 🔹Turn the ignition to ON (engine not required) and switch on the parking/headlights to check tail/parking lights.
- 🔹Have a helper press the brake pedal while you stand behind the CR-V to check brake lights.
- 🔹Activate the turn signals and hazard lights to confirm turn signal bulbs work.
- 🔹If any bulb does not light, turn it off, reopen the area, and make sure the bulb is fully seated and the socket is properly twisted and locked.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Verify all rear lights (tail, brake, turn, reverse if changed) work correctly on both sides.
- 🔹Check that the taillight assemblies sit flush with the body and there are no gaps.
- 🔹Put any cargo back in the rear and remove tools from the area.
- 🔹Recheck the lights again at night or in a shaded area to ensure brightness is even.
