🔧 Tucson - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Tucson’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the rear tail lamp assemblies. Replacing them usually requires removing the outer tail lamp (on the body) to access the bulb socket, then swapping the bulb and reinstalling everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Turn lights off and let bulbs cool; they can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t scratch paint or drop.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, match OE type) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Tucson on level ground and open the rear liftgate.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Lay a clean microfiber towel on the bumper edge to protect paint while handling the lamp.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which side bulb you’re replacing

  • Turn on the hazard lights, then walk to the rear to see which side is out.
  • Turn the hazards back off before you start disassembly.

Step 2: Access the tail lamp fasteners (inside the cargo area)

  • Open the liftgate.
  • On the side you’re working on, use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pop off the small interior access cover behind the tail lamp area (if equipped).
  • If your Tucson has carpeting covering the access area, gently pull it back by hand.

Step 3: Remove the outer tail lamp assembly (body-mounted lamp)

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
  • Set the nuts aside somewhere safe.
  • With both hands, pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips. Pull straight back, don’t twist.
  • Support the lamp on the microfiber towel to protect the paint.
  • If your lamp uses a retaining screw instead of (or in addition to) nuts, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • When reinstalling the nuts later: Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the socket for the turn signal (it will twist out from the back of the tail lamp).
  • Rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use work gloves for grip (do not pry on the lens).

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Important: Match the new bulb to the old one (same base and size). If it doesn’t match exactly, stop and don’t force it.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Turn on the hazard lights to confirm the new bulb flashes normally.
  • If it doesn’t light, remove the socket and reseat the bulb, then test again.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Align the lamp’s guide pins/clips with the body holes, then press the lamp straight inward until fully seated.
  • Install the nuts using a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the interior access cover by hand (or press clips back in place).

âś… After Repair

  • Verify: left turn, right turn, hazards, and brake lights all work.
  • Check the lamp sits flush with the body and the liftgate closes without rubbing.
  • If the turn signal still “hyper-flashes” (fast blinking), the wrong bulb type may be installed or there may be another bulb out.
