How to Replace the Front Window Regulator on a 2016 Hyundai Tucson (Driver or Passenger)
Step-by-step front door panel removal, regulator/motor swap, tools, parts, torque specs, and auto-up reset tips

š§ Tucson - Front Window Regulator Replacement
The front window regulator is the cable/track assembly that moves the glass up and down. Replacing it requires removing the front door trim panel, securing the glass, swapping the regulator (and motor if included), then reassembling and re-initializing the auto-up/down.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours (per door)
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before working in the door (your Tucson has side airbag wiring in/near the door panel).
- ā ļø Support the window glass before unbolting it from the regulatorāglass can drop and shatter.
- ā ļø Keep fingers clear of the regulator tracks and cable drum; pinch hazard.
- ā ļø Do not turn the ignition on with door airbag connectors unplugged (can set an airbag warning light).

- Flat-head screwdriver (small)
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4" drive)

- Pick tool (small)
š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front window regulator assembly (Left/Driver or Right/Passenger) - Qty: 1
- Front window motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included with regulator)
- Door panel retaining clips - Qty: 6-12 (replace any broken)
- Door water shield butyl tape - Qty: 1 (as needed)
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Lower the window to about halfway if it still moves (this gives access to the glass clamp bolts).
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal and isolate it so it canāt touch the post.
- Set screws in cups; label them.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel
- Use a trim removal tool set to carefully pop off the small trim cover in/near the interior door handle and/or armrest (covers hide screws).
- Remove the exposed screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2 (typical locations: door pull handle pocket and behind handle trim).
- Use a trim removal tool set to pry around the panel edges and release the push-clips (youāll hear them pop).
- Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Disconnect electrical connectors (window switch, mirror switch, courtesy light) using a pick tool (small) to lift locking tabs if needed.
- If equipped, unclip the interior handle cable using a flat-head screwdriver (small) (rotate the cable retainer and lift the cable end out).
Step 2: Remove the water shield (vapor barrier)
- Peel the water shield back slowly by hand; use needle-nose pliers to help if itās stubborn.
- Try to keep the butyl (sticky sealant) clean so it can reseal later.
Step 3: Secure the window glass
- Use painter's tape (2" wide) to tape the glass to the door frame from the outside (two to three long strips).
- If the glass is loose, support it with one hand while applying tape.
Step 4: Detach the glass from the regulator
- Locate the glass-to-regulator clamp bolts through the access holes in the door.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension to loosen/remove the clamp bolts.
- Torque on reassembly: 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) for glass clamp bolts (best-effort common Hyundai spec).
- Gently slide the glass up by hand to the full-up position and add more painter's tape to hold it.
Step 5: Disconnect the window motor (if separate)
- Unplug the motor connector using your fingers or a pick tool (small) to release the lock tab.
Step 6: Unbolt and remove the regulator assembly
- Remove the regulator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket (some locations may use 12mm socket depending on build).
- Torque on reassembly: 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) for regulator bolts (best-effort common Hyundai spec).
- If the motor is reused and mounted to the regulator, remove motor screws/bolts with the appropriate tool (often 10mm socket or Phillips screwdriver #2 depending on design).
- Torque on reassembly: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for motor fasteners (best-effort low torque).
- Maneuver the regulator out through the largest door access opening. Use a magnetic pickup tool if a bolt drops inside the door.
Step 7: Install the new regulator (and motor if included)
- Slide the new regulator into position through the access opening and align it to the mounting holes.
- Hand-thread all bolts first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range Nm).
- If reusing the motor, transfer it to the new regulator and tighten fasteners with a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reattach the glass to the regulator
- Carefully lower the glass (remove some painter's tape as needed) until it sits into the regulator clamps.
- Install and tighten the clamp bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Remove all painter's tape once the glass is secured.
Step 9: Reinstall the water shield and door panel
- Press the water shield back onto the butyl seal. Add door water shield butyl tape where it no longer sticks.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors by hand until they click.
- Reattach the interior handle cable if removed.
- Hang the door panel on the top ledge and press clips in around the perimeter with your palm.
- Reinstall screws with a Phillips screwdriver #2 and snap trim covers back in using a trim removal tool set (gentle pressure).
Step 10: Reconnect battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket and snug it firmly.
ā After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test the window operation (up/down) while listening for binding or clicking.
- Initialize auto-up/down: raise the window fully and hold the switch in the UP position for 2-3 seconds, then lower fully and hold DOWN for 2-3 seconds, then raise fully again and hold UP for 2-3 seconds.
- Verify door locks, mirror controls, and courtesy light work.
- If an airbag light appears, recheck door connectors (ignition should be OFF while connecting).
