🔧 Tucson - Front Window Regulator Replacement

Replacing the front window regulator on your Tucson means removing the inner door panel, supporting the glass, swapping the regulator (and sometimes the motor), then reassembling and testing. The exact steps and bolt torque specs vary depending on which front door and whether your replacement includes the motor.

Before I give the exact step-by-step with correct torque specs: (1) Which side are we doing—front driver or front passenger? (2) Did you buy a regulator only or a regulator with motor?

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the window track and scissor/cable mechanism while the glass is loose.
  • ⚠️ Support the door glass with tape or suction cups before unbolting it from the regulator.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative terminal before unplugging door wiring connectors (reduces short/airbag risk).
  • ⚠️ If equipped with a side-impact airbag in the door, do not power the system with the airbag unplugged.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator - Qty: 1
  • Front window regulator motor - Qty: 1
  • Door panel trim clips - Qty: 6-12
  • Butyl door vapor barrier sealant - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, key off, window fully up if possible.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes.
  • Have tape ready to secure the glass to the door frame once loosened.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm door side and part type (regulator vs regulator + motor)

  • Please reply: driver or passenger, and regulator only or regulator + motor.
  • I’ll then give the exact bolt locations and Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) values for your Tucson.

Step 2: Remove the inner door panel (outline)

  • Use a flat trim tool to pop off the trim covers at the door pull/handle area.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove visible screws.
  • Use a flat trim tool to release the door panel clips around the edges, then lift the panel up and off.

Step 3: Peel back the vapor barrier and access the regulator

  • Use a hook pick tool to start peeling the vapor barrier without tearing it.
  • Re-seal later using butyl door vapor barrier sealant.

Step 4: Support the glass and separate it from the regulator

  • Use painters tape (1.5") to secure the glass to the door frame in several strips.
  • If needed, use a suction cup glass holder (specialty) to control the glass safely.

Step 5: Remove and replace the regulator assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the regulator and (if separate) motor fasteners.
  • Swap over the motor if your new regulator does not include it.

Step 6: Reassemble and function-check

  • Reconnect electrical connectors, reinstall the vapor barrier, then reinstall the door panel using the flat trim tool.
  • Use a torque wrench (5–80 Nm range) to tighten fasteners to spec once I confirm your side/part type.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery using a 10mm wrench.
  • Test window up/down operation and listen for binding or clicking.
  • If the auto-up/down feature acts odd, do a window initialization: run the window fully down, then fully up, holding the switch for 2–3 seconds at each end.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350-$750 (parts + labor)
