- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open windows for ventilation.
- Run the fuel level down to about 1/4 tank (lighter and less spill risk).
- Relieve fuel pressure: remove the fuel pump fuse/relay, start the engine, and let it run until it stalls; crank for 2–3 seconds more.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Vacuum the rear seat area first so dirt can’t fall into the tank opening.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect battery
- Remove the fuel pump fuse/relay (from the under-hood/under-dash fuse box per cover diagram) by hand or with needle-nose pliers.
- Start the engine and let it die; crank 2–3 seconds to finish bleeding pressure.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
Step 2: Remove the rear seat cushion
- Release the rear seat cushion clips using a flat trim removal tool, then lift the cushion up and out.
- If your seat uses bolts at the front edge, remove them with a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
Step 3: Open the fuel pump access cover
- Locate the service access cover on the floor under the rear seat.
- Remove access cover fasteners using a Phillips screwdriver (or a 10mm socket if equipped).
- Peel back the cover carefully and set it aside; use shop towels to keep dirt away.
Step 4: Disconnect electrical connector and fuel lines
- Unplug the pump electrical connector by hand.
- Place shop towels around the line connections and position a catch pan (fuel-safe) nearby.
- Disconnect fuel lines using the fuel line disconnect tool set (specialty) (this tool slides into the connector to release the internal spring lock).
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove any external retaining clips (do not break them).
Step 5: Remove the pump module lock ring
- Mark the lock ring and tank with a reference line using a Phillips screwdriver (light scratch mark) so you can reinstall to the same position.
- Tap the lock ring counterclockwise using a brass punch (non-sparking) (specialty) and small hammer.
- Lift the lock ring off and set it aside on shop towels.
Step 6: Remove the fuel pump module
- Carefully lift the module straight up; angle it as needed to clear the opening without bending the float arm.
- Drain fuel from the module into the catch pan (fuel-safe).
- Remove the old tank seal/O-ring from the tank opening by hand; do not reuse it.
Step 7: Install the new seal and new pump module
- Clean the sealing surface with shop towels only; keep dirt out of the tank.
- Install the new fuel pump module tank seal / O-ring into the groove.
- Lower the new module into the tank, guiding the float arm carefully. Move slowly—floats bend easily.
Step 8: Reinstall and tighten the lock ring
- Install the lock ring and start it by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten by tapping clockwise with the brass punch (non-sparking) (specialty) and small hammer until your alignment marks match.
- Torque note: If you have the proper adapter for your torque wrench (3/8"), tighten the lock ring to the factory specification for your Accord fuel pump lock ring. Lock-ring torque varies by design.
Step 9: Reconnect fuel lines and electrical connector
- Reconnect fuel lines until they click/lock; reinstall any retaining clips using needle-nose pliers.
- Plug in the electrical connector by hand until fully seated.
- Wipe everything dry with shop towels so leaks are easy to spot.
Step 10: Reinstall access cover and rear seat
- Reinstall the access cover using a Phillips screwdriver (or 10mm socket, if equipped).
- Reinstall the rear seat cushion and press down firmly to re-engage the clips.
- If bolts were removed, reinstall using a 10mm socket and torque wrench (3/8"); Torque to factory specification.
✅ After Repair
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket; Torque to factory specification.
- Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay by hand.
- Prime the system: turn key to ON (not start) for 2–3 seconds, OFF for 5 seconds; repeat 3 times.
- Start the engine and let it idle while you check the pump area for any fuel smell or wetness.
- If you see any seepage, shut the car off immediately and recheck the seal, line locks, and lock ring alignment.
