🔧 Accord - Side View Mirror Replacement

On your Accord, the side mirror is held on by three nuts behind the interior sail panel (the small trim triangle at the front top of the door). The job is mainly removing a few trim pieces, unplugging the mirror wiring, swapping the mirror, then reassembling.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours (one side)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the key out of the ignition to avoid accidental window/mirror movement.
  • ⚠️ Use plastic trim tools to reduce cracking/scratching interior panels.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror with your hand before removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but avoid probing connectors with metal tools.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painter’s tape
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (left or right, correct options) - Qty: 1
  • Door panel trim clips - Qty: 2-6
  • Mirror-to-door gasket (if not included with mirror) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Apply painter’s tape around the mirror base area on the door to help protect paint.
  • Confirm your replacement mirror matches your Accord’s equipment (power adjust; some mirrors may also have heat or a turn-signal). If it has extra features, you may see additional electrical connectors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the sail panel (mirror inner trim)

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set (a non-metal pry tool) to gently pry off the small triangular trim panel at the top front of the door.
  • If it feels stuck, work around the edges and pop each clip free one at a time using the plastic trim removal tool set.

Step 2: Access the mirror connector

  • Look behind where the sail panel was and locate the mirror wiring connector.
  • Press the locking tab and unplug it by hand; if needed, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body (not the wires).
  • Tip: Push in, then press tab, then pull.

Step 3: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4" drive) to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
  • If a nut drops inside the door, retrieve it using a magnetic pickup tool.

Step 4: Remove the mirror assembly

  • From outside the door, pull the mirror straight away from the door while feeding the wiring through the opening.
  • Inspect the mirror gasket; if torn or stuck to the door, remove it carefully using the plastic trim removal tool set.

Step 5: Install the new mirror

  • Set the new mirror in place and feed the wiring through the door opening.
  • Start all three nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4" drive).
  • Final-tighten using a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 9 N·m (80 in-lb).

Step 6: Reconnect wiring and reinstall trim

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks (push firmly by hand).
  • Reinstall the sail panel by lining up the clips and pressing it in place with your hand.

Step 7: Function check

  • Turn ignition ON and test mirror movement with the mirror switch.
  • If your mirror has heat or a turn signal, verify those functions work as well.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the mirror sits flush to the door and the gasket seals evenly (no gaps).
  • Test drive briefly and listen for wind noise around the mirror; if present, recheck gasket seating and nut torque.
  • Remove the painter’s tape and clean any fingerprints off the paint and glass.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$650 (parts + labor, varies by mirror options/paint)

DIY Cost: $90-$450 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$200+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8-1.2 hours.
