F-150 - Taillight Bulb Replacement 💡
On your Platinum, the taillight bulbs are in the rear lamp assemblies on the bed sides. You’ll be working from inside the tailgate area.
Safety & Prep ⚠️
- 🧯 Safety first
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and put the truck in PARK.
- Turn the lights and ignition OFF.
- If you’re nervous about short circuits, disconnect the negative battery cable (10 mm nut) at the battery.
Tools & Parts You’ll Need 🧰
- 🔧 Tools
- 8 mm socket and ratchet (or nut driver) – for taillight screws.
- Short extension (2–3") – makes access easier.
- Trim tool or plastic pry tool – to gently help pull the lamp if it’s stuck; a trim tool is a flat plastic lever used to pop panels without scratching.
- Clean gloves – keeps bulbs clean and your hands safe.
- 💡 Bulbs (2015 F-150, non-LED rear lamps)
- Tail/Brake/Turn bulb: typically a dual‑filament bulb (e.g., 3157 type). Replace both sides as a pair so brightness matches.
- Reverse bulb (if you want to do them too while you’re there): usually 921/7440 style depending on build; check the number printed on your old bulb.
Tip: Before buying, pull one bulb and read the number on its base to match exactly.
Accessing the Taillight Assemblies 🚚
- 🔩 Step 1 – Open tailgate
- Lower the tailgate fully to expose the inner edge of each taillight.
- 🔩 Step 2 – Remove taillight screws
- On each taillight (inside edge, facing the tailgate opening) you’ll see two 8 mm screws.
- Use the 8 mm socket and ratchet to remove both screws.
- Set the screws somewhere safe; you’ll reuse them.
- 🤏 Step 3 – Pull the taillight straight back
- With the screws out, the lamp is still held by plastic alignment pins that push into clips in the body.
- Place one hand on the outer edge and one on the inner edge of the lamp.
- Pull the lamp straight back toward you (away from the truck) with firm, steady pressure.
- If it’s stuck, gently wiggle side to side while pulling. You can use a plastic trim tool at the inner edge to help, but do not pry with metal tools to avoid cracking the lens or scratching paint.
Replacing the Bulbs 💡
- 🔌 Step 4 – Identify the bulb sockets
- On the back of the taillight you’ll see several round bulb sockets that twist into the housing.
- On most 2015 F-150s:
- Upper socket – tail/brake/turn bulb.
- Lower socket – reverse bulb.
- Follow the wiring to see which socket corresponds to the bulb you’re replacing.
- 🔄 Step 5 – Remove the bulb socket
- Grasp the socket firmly.
- Rotate it about ¼ turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the taillight housing.
- 💡 Step 6 – Remove the old bulb
- Most bulbs are push‑in wedge style: just pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
- If it feels stuck, gently rock it while pulling; don’t twist hard.
- ✨ Step 7 – Install the new bulb
- With clean gloves or a clean cloth, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the glass with bare fingers if using halogen bulbs; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- 🔁 Step 8 – Reinstall the socket into the taillight
- Align the tabs on the socket with the slots in the taillight housing.
- Insert the socket and rotate ¼ turn clockwise until it stops. It should feel snug.
Reinstalling the Taillight 🔧
- 📏 Step 9 – Position the taillight
- Line up the plastic guide pins on the back of the taillight with the holes in the truck body.
- Push the lamp straight in until it sits flush with the body.
- 🔩 Step 10 – Install the screws
- Reinstall the two 8 mm screws on the inner edge.
- Tighten them snugly with the ratchet – do not overtighten or you can crack the plastic. About 3–4 N·m (27–35 in‑lb) is typical “snug with two fingers on the ratchet.”
- 🔁 Step 11 – Repeat on the other side
- Do the exact same steps for the other taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.
Testing the Lights ✅
- 🔍 Step 12 – Function check
- Reconnect the negative battery cable if you removed it.
- Turn the headlight switch to ON (parking or headlights) to check tail lights.
- Press the brake pedal (have a helper, or use a stick between seat and pedal) to check brake lights.
- Use the turn signals to check left and right.
- Shift to REVERSE (with foot on brake, in a safe area) to check reverse lights.
If any light doesn’t work, flip that bulb 180° in the socket (for wedge bulbs) and try again, and double‑check the socket is fully locked in.
