How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2016 Ford F-150
Step-by-step 2016 F-150 headlight bulb replacement with tools, bulb types, safety tips, and troubleshooting

F-150 - Headlight Bulb Replacement 💡
On your F-150, the low and high beams are in the main headlamp housing. I’ll walk you through the standard halogen bulb replacement from behind the headlight (no bumper removal).
Quick check: Are you replacing the low beams, high beams, or both? I’ll assume both for now and note each bulb type.
Parts & Bulb Types 📦
- 🔧 Low beam bulb: Typically H11 halogen for 2016 Lariat (non-HID).
- If your truck has factory HID/LED headlights, the procedure and parts are different and more complex.
- 🔧 High beam bulb: Typically 9005 halogen.
- 🔧 Replace bulbs in pairs (both sides low beam, both sides high beam) to keep brightness and color even.
- 🔧 Clean gloves or paper towel (to avoid touching glass).
- 🔧 Small amount of dielectric grease (non-conductive grease for electrical connectors; helps prevent corrosion) – optional but recommended.
Tools Needed 🧰
- 🔧 1/4" or 3/8" ratchet
- 🔧 8 mm socket (for air intake box bolts if you need more room on driver side)
- 🔧 Flat trim tool or flat screwdriver (to gently move plastic clips/hoses if needed)
- 🔧 Flashlight (helps a lot behind the headlight)
Safety First ⚠️
- ⚠️ Turn headlight switch OFF and remove the key (or turn ignition fully off).
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes if they were just on; they get very hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulbs. Oil from your fingers can make them burn out early.
- ⚠️ Work on a flat surface, parking brake set.
F-150 - Accessing the Headlight Bulbs (Both Sides) 🔍
You’ll be working from inside the engine bay, behind each headlight.
Passenger Side Bulbs 🧭
- Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
- Locate the back of the passenger headlight:
- You’ll see two round plastic caps on the rear of the headlight housing.
- One is for the low beam (H11), the other for the high beam (9005).
- Remove the dust cap:
- Grip the round cap and turn it counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn.
- Pull it straight back and set it aside.
- Disconnect the bulb connector:
- Inside, you’ll see the bulb with a plastic electrical connector on it.
- Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb.
- If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pressing the tab; don’t yank the wires.
- Remove the old bulb:
- Turn the bulb itself counterclockwise about 1/8 turn.
- Pull it straight out of the housing.
- Prepare the new bulb:
- Hold it by the plastic base, not the glass.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
- Optional: put a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside the connector (not on the metal pins).
- Install the new bulb:
- Align the tabs on the bulb with the slots in the housing.
- Insert the bulb fully, then turn it clockwise until it stops. It should feel snug, not loose.
- Reconnect the electrical connector:
- Push the connector onto the bulb until you feel or hear a click.
- Reinstall the dust cap:
- Place the cap back over the opening.
- Turn it clockwise until it locks in place.
- Repeat for the other bulb (low or high beam) on the same side:
- Use the same steps for the second cap on that headlight.
Driver Side Bulbs (Tighter Space) 🧭
The driver side is similar but space is tighter because of the air intake box and other components.
- Open the hood if not already open.
- Look behind the driver headlight for the same style round dust caps.
- If you have enough room, follow the same steps as passenger side (remove cap, unplug, twist bulb out, install new bulb, reinstall cap).
- If space is too tight:
- Use your 8 mm socket to remove the bolts holding the air intake snorkel/box near the headlight.
- Gently move the intake tube or box slightly out of the way (you don’t need to fully remove it, just shift it for more hand room).
- Repeat the same bulb replacement steps:
- Remove dust cap → unplug connector → twist bulb out → install new bulb → reconnect → reinstall cap.
- Reinstall any air intake bolts you removed and snug them down with the 8 mm socket. No exact torque needed here; just firm, not gorilla tight.
Testing the New Bulbs ✅
- Close the hood or leave it open but keep hands clear of moving parts.
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off).
- Turn on the low beams and walk around the front:
- Check that both sides are lit and similar brightness.
- Switch to high beams and check again.
- If one doesn’t light:
- Turn lights OFF.
- Recheck the connector is fully clicked on and the bulb is fully seated.
Tips & Tricks 🧠
- 💡 Do one side at a time so you can look at the other side as a reference if you get confused.
- 💡 Take a photo of the bulb orientation before removing it; helps when installing the new one.
- 💡 If you ever upgrade to LED bulbs, make sure they are CAN-bus compatible and DOT-approved to avoid flicker and glare.
