🔧 Tucson - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. If it leaks or the bearing fails, the engine can overheat quickly, so replacing it is important to prevent major engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; pressure can spray hot coolant.
  • ⚠️ Support your Tucson with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause belt slip.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic to people and pets; catch and dispose properly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep hands clear of the radiator fans.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (2+ gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench
  • 3/8" extension set
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Gasket scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as supplied with pump) - Qty: 1
  • Hyundai-compatible long-life coolant (HOAT) - Qty: 1-2 gallons (concentrate) or equivalent premix
  • Distilled water - Qty: 1-2 gallons (if using concentrate)
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if worn/cracked)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and let the engine cool completely (minimum 2 hours).
  • 🧰 Set the HVAC to full HOT (this helps coolant circulate through the heater core during bleeding).
  • 🧰 Gather containers for used coolant and plan proper disposal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front-right corner

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack to lift the front-right jacking point and set it on jack stands.
  • Remove the front-right wheel using a 17mm socket.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 88-108 Nm (65-80 ft-lbs).

Step 2: Remove the splash shield (inner fender) for access

  • Use a trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver to remove the clips/screws holding the right inner splash shield.
  • Pull the shield back to expose the accessory belt area.

Step 3: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand (only when cool).
  • Open the radiator drain cock (petcock) and drain coolant into the drain pan.
  • Tip: Keep coolant off the belt area.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Locate the belt tensioner.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off a smooth pulley first, then remove it fully.
  • Tip: Take a photo of belt routing first.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • If your water pump has a pulley, remove its bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • If the pulley wants to spin, hold it by hand while loosening bolts, or reinstall the belt temporarily to hold it while breaking bolts loose.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place the drain pan under the pump area (more coolant will spill).
  • Remove water pump mounting bolts using a 12mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Remove the pump from the engine.
  • Important: Keep track of bolt locations if lengths differ.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Spray a towel with brake cleaner spray and wipe until clean and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 8: Install the new water pump and gasket

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (as designed).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 12mm socket.
  • Final tighten using a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to Hyundai factory specification.
  • Tip: Even tightening prevents leaks.

Step 9: Reinstall the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • Reinstall the pulley and start bolts by hand.
  • Tighten using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten using a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to Hyundai factory specification.

Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to your photo.
  • Rotate the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 14mm socket and slip the belt into place.
  • Visually confirm the belt is centered in every pulley groove.

Step 11: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the inner splash shield using the trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the wheel using a 17mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle off jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Final tighten wheel nuts with a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 88-108 Nm (65-80 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain cock by hand (snug, not over-tight).
  • Use a funnel to fill the reservoir/radiator (as equipped) with Hyundai-compatible long-life coolant (HOAT).
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to HOT.
  • Watch coolant level and add as needed as air burps out.
  • When the radiator hose warms up and cabin heat is hot, shut the engine off and let it cool, then recheck and top off.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Check for leaks around the water pump with the engine running.
  • 🧪 Verify steady cabin heat and stable temperature gauge (no overheating).
  • 🧪 Recheck coolant level again the next morning (cold engine) and top off as needed.
  • 🧪 Inspect belt tracking: it should run straight with no squeal.
