🔧 Outback - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades on your Outback is a quick job that improves visibility and prevents streaking and chatter. You’ll remove the old blades from the wiper arms and snap the new ones on, making sure they lock in place.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and keep hands clear of the wiper linkage.
  • ⚠️ Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the glass—this can crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ If the arm is uncovered, place a towel on the windshield under it.
  • Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel
  • Painter’s tape

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 17" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lift the wiper arms away from the windshield carefully.
  • Apply painter’s tape to mark each wiper’s resting position on the glass (optional but helpful).
  • Lay a clean shop towel on the windshield under the wiper arm area as a cushion.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the driver-side wiper arm

  • Lift the driver-side wiper arm up until it stays in the raised position.
  • Place a clean shop towel on the glass under the arm to protect the windshield.
  • Hold the arm anytime the blade is off.

Step 2: Remove the old blade from the wiper arm

  • Rotate the wiper blade so it’s angled perpendicular to the wiper arm (this gives you room to release it).
  • Find the small release tab/clip where the blade attaches to the arm.
  • Press the tab with your thumb (use nitrile gloves for grip), then slide the blade down and off the hook.
  • Term: The “hook” is the J-shaped end of the wiper arm that the blade slides onto.

Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade (26")

  • Remove packaging and confirm the blade length is 26".
  • Align the blade’s connector with the hook on the arm.
  • Slide the blade onto the hook until you hear/feel a solid click.
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked.

Step 4: Lower the driver-side arm safely

  • Use your hand to guide the arm back down to the windshield—don’t let it drop.
  • Remove the clean shop towel if it’s in the way.

Step 5: Repeat for the passenger-side blade (17")

  • Lift the passenger-side arm and place the clean shop towel under it.
  • Remove the old blade by pressing the release tab and sliding it off the hook.
  • Install the new 17" blade and confirm it clicks/locks.
  • Lower the arm gently back onto the windshield.

✅ After Repair

  • Spray washer fluid and run the wipers to confirm smooth wiping and no streaks.
  • If you see streaking, wipe the windshield with a clean towel and washer fluid (road film can mimic bad blades).
  • Recheck both blades are fully seated if you hear clunking or see uneven wiping.
