🔧 Outback - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Outback’s front turn signal bulbs sit in the back of each headlight housing. The job is mostly about gaining access, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping in a new amber bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool before reaching in near the bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you must reach past sharp edges, wear gloves to avoid cuts.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat trim tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the lights OFF and make sure the turn signal stalk is in the neutral position.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see the bulb sockets.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re changing

  • Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF.
  • Walk to the front and identify which side is out (left/right) by watching the flashing lamp.

Step 2: Access the rear of the headlight housing

  • Open the hood and locate the back of the headlight assembly on the side you’re working on.
  • Use a flashlight to find the turn signal bulb socket (it’s one of the twist-lock sockets on the rear of the headlamp).
  • If an intake snorkel or plastic cover blocks your hand, gently move it aside or release a clip using a small flat trim tool. Only move what you must.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t force.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb from the socket

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (it’s a push-in style bulb).
  • If it won’t budge, use your nitrile gloves for extra grip and pull straight—avoid twisting hard.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Do not touch the bulb glass; keep using nitrile gloves.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing and rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Turn the hazard lights ON to verify it flashes normally.
  • If it doesn’t light, turn hazards OFF, remove the socket again, and confirm the bulb is fully seated.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way (recommended so color/brightness match).
  • Re-secure any clips/covers you moved using the small flat trim tool.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn hazards ON and verify both front turn signals flash evenly and at normal speed.
  • Check left and right turn signals from the stalk, and confirm the dash indicator blinks normally (not fast).
  • Close the hood and take a quick walk-around to confirm no other lights were disturbed.
